Most Aucklanders believe Sir Dove-Myer Robinson was the most effective and sensible mayor the city ever had. 

Robbie’s famous line was that Auckland was building “**a giant Los Angeles without the sunshine**”. He was ridiculed at the time, but he was right: decades later, congestion became Auckland’s defining problem and the same rail tunnel he argued for has now been built.
