There’s a lot of noise at the moment about companies using artificial intelligence to screen job applicants. We’re told it’s “dehumanising.” That people feel reduced to data points. That something important has been lost.

I understand the concern – but I also think it’s worth asking a more uncomfortable question.

When exactly did hiring stop being human?

Because I can tell you from experience, the shift did not begin with AI. It began decades ago – quietly and almost politely.
