First the poll: Labor is set to not just lose another brick in its ‘red wall’ of state Labor governments, but lose it to One Nation. After ON shocked the major parties by surging in South Australia, and thrashing Labor in a WA seat they’ve never lost before, the Orange Wave is threatening to swamp Labor’s heartland. > [**Chris Minns** faces](https://www.theaustralian.com.au/nation/one-nation-surges-to-draw-level-with-nsw-labor-as-support-for-lifting-uranium-ban-grows/news-story/6ddd162046da701ed381b0a8d0052897?ref=goodoil.news) an orange wave at the NSW election with new polling showing One Nation level-pegging with Labor less than six months out from polls opening. > > Labor and One Nation both secured 29 per cent of first preference votes, according to the survey of voting intentions for the March state election, compared with 18 per cent of respondents nominating the Liberals and Nationals. The polling has been consistent for months. The only change has been by how *far* ahead One Nation are and how dire Labor’s vote is. Then there’s the latest scandal for Labor, which they are clearly not even prepared to deal with. > [The West Australian government](https://www.theaustralian.com.au/nation/indigenous/ill-be-doing-that-malarndirri-mccarthy-yet-to-contact-wa-over-rampant-child-neglect-crisis/news-story/ac320c747203841c3e6c1c24a7fea878?ref=goodoil.news) is scrambling to address shocking revelations that vulnerable indigenous children at dire risk of ­sexual abuse and neglect are being ignored by local authorities, ­admitting it was ­unacceptable that kids as young as five were ­living unsupervised in squalid conditions. > > The Australian has detailed how up to 15 children as young as five years old were living without adults at a house in Frisby Court, South Hedland, for up to a week at a time. Minister for Indigenous Australians **Malarndirri McCarthy**, who isn’t backward about touting her Aboriginal credentials, is suddenly nowhere to be seen. The most she can say is that she’s “certainly read” the newspaper stories. Let that sink in: the Minister for Indigenous Australians, a part-Aboriginal woman who endlessly bangs on about ‘indigenous’ this and ‘First Nations’ that, is so uninformed about her own portfolio that she only reads some stories in the newspapers. She refuses to even visit the communities affected. What is the uniparty to do? What they always do: dig up some old dirt and stage a ludicrous exhibition of pearl-clutching and confected faux-‘outrage’. In this case, comments made on a podcast over a year ago, where the ON leader did nothing but tell the truth. > [**Pauline Hanson** labelled](https://www.theaustralian.com.au/nation/politics-latest-one-nation-releases-migration-plan-to-cut-750000-temporary-visa-holders/live-coverage/7d8d0b02b262ad04f068e3ad40c5e105?ref=goodoil.news) indigenous Australians “the most primitive race on earth”, as the One Nation leader comes under growing pressure over her offensive statements. To quote **Stephen Fry**: “So you’re offended? Well, so fucking what?” Being ‘offended’ is not a measure of truth or falsity. It’s only a measure of how thin-skinned you are. For all the screeching, where is Hanson wrong? What does the dictionary say? > [**Primitive:**](https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/primitive?ref=goodoil.news) Relating to human society at a very early stage of development, with people living in a simple way without machines or a writing system. To really rub it in, Cambridge uses exactly the same phrase as Hanson did, in its example: “Primitive races”. Prior to 1776, Aborigines lived a hunter-gatherer lifestyle at a Paleolithic level. Their toolkit was simple in the extreme: stone, bone, shells, wood and hair. No machines, no writing system. Not even, as Hanson pointed out, a machine as simple and immensely useful as a wheel (for those who try and claim wheels are useless without domesticated animals: have you never used a wheelbarrow?) > [Senator Hanson made](https://www.theaustralian.com.au/nation/politics-latest-one-nation-releases-migration-plan-to-cut-750000-temporary-visa-holders/live-coverage/7d8d0b02b262ad04f068e3ad40c5e105?ref=goodoil.news) the comments on an interview with the Jamie J podcast last year, where she criticised the amount of focus there is on indigenous history in the school curriculum \[…\] > > “A teacher from Western Australia wrote to me and said, ‘the whole curriculum has changed. We’re not teaching Australian history about civil rights, about what’s happened in the past’,” Senator Hanson said. > > “We’re actually all leaning towards this …teaching about Aboriginal culture and language. For what?” For what, indeed? Since 1776, aside from punching above our weight in science and culture, Australia has one of the most fascinating histories on Earth: Australia pioneered a great many democratic institutions the rest of the world takes for granted. Parole systems, the secret ballot, universal suffrage (NZ allowed women the vote earlier, but Australia was the first to pass voting and the right to stand for election, just a few years later). Yet, as Hanson says, “a few, you know, rock paintings” dominate the school history curriculum, which is not entirely fair: they had shell middens, too. > [Senator Hanson faces](https://www.theaustralian.com.au/nation/politics-latest-one-nation-releases-migration-plan-to-cut-750000-temporary-visa-holders/live-coverage/7d8d0b02b262ad04f068e3ad40c5e105?ref=goodoil.news) criticism for the comments a day after **Anthony Albanese** defended his late mother against the populist leaders’ remarks about her time in public housing. If all of this sounds like a co-ordinated pile-on, that’s because it is. In one week, the legacy media have dredged up decades-old allegations about the misspent youth of One Nation’s Victorian leader, a months-old cartoon mocking **Andrew Hastie**, nine-month old comments questioning Anthony Albanese’s generational welfare bludging and year-old comments telling the uncomfortable truth about the primitiveness of Aboriginal culture.
