**George**

Words matter to me. When the PM announced that level 4 was to be extended by five days and then added the rider that it was only two business days, it identified a classic example of verbal manipulation. The intent was to minimise the impact of the decision, but worse, she thought her audience was unsophisticated enough to buy it. It is these small things that become an irritant.

Another aggravation that is festering in my mind is this 11.59pm nonsense. Level 4 came into being precisely at 11.59pm on 25 March. Level 4 is to be extended to precisely 11.59pm Mon 27 April. Level 3 was to commence precisely at 11.59pm on Monday 27 April. Why can’t they just say, in simple terms, that we will move to level 3 on Tuesday 28 April? There is no logical explanation to explain why 11.59pm is relevant, but I have my thoughts.

There is drama attached to 11.59 pm. It indicates precision. It identifies micro-management of the pandemic. It suggests that every minute counts. It introduces a sense of military astuteness. But it also certifies that our current administration is a pack of manipulative clowns.

There are only two occasions when 11.59 pm is relevant. One is on 31 December when it gives you a minute to fill your glass to welcome in the new year. The second is on Saturday 19 September when it gives you a minute to fill your glass to celebrate the election of a new Government.
