Te Pukenga, NZ’s merged mega polytech, is predicting a **$110m deficit**. CEO (and ex-head of Auckland City Council) Stephen Town was earning nearly $700,000 per annum but is now on leave for “personal reasons”.

What a mess.

Tertiary Education Commission deputy chief executive Gillian Dudgeon alerted Minister of Education **Chris Hipkins** as to how dire the situation was in May this year but a quick search shows MPs were already [aware of serious issues](https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/education/126785490/staff-wage-bill-for-tertiary-education-provider-te-pkenga-is-11m-boss-tells-mps?rm=a&ref=goodoil.news) last year.
