Green Party delegates have voted James Shaw out as co-leader. “This is obviously a bit of a surprise. I’ve got to work through a few things,” he [said](https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/political/471489/green-party-s-james-shaw-to-face-leadership-challenge?fbclid=IwAR23EJGNxpv07f9feIg4tROZFA%5F3W-RQWR60dVap7vLD8GHkYHN2Z0xO5LM&ref=goodoil.news).

James Cockle challenged Shaw at the 2021 AGM, but he retained his leadership. At the beginning of this year, it was [reported](https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/political/459250/green-party-discontent-members-walk-ex-mps-criticise-leadership?ref=goodoil.news) that (former co-leader) Russel Norman called Shaw’s climate position “**simply not credible**”, and activists have left the party:

> They accuse co-leader Shaw of having an **autocratic style** and complain that the party executive is not holding the caucus and leadership to account over policy decisions in government.

Shaw became Green Party co-leader in 2015 after Russel Norman retired. The party re-confirms its leaders each year at the AGM. There will be another vote within five weeks to select a co-leader to stand with Marama Davidson. Shaw can still stand for consideration and his portfolios, notably **Minister for Climate Change**, are not affected.
