Starting 1 January 2025, first-time tertiary learners can access up to $12,000 in Fees Free funding for their final year of study or last two years of work-based training, Tertiary Education Minister Penny Simmonds announced. “This rewards hard work and motivates students to finish their qualifications,” Simmonds said. Replacing the first-year scheme, the policy incentivises success and streamlines payments via Inland Revenue starting in 2026.
