> ***We pride ourselves as a democratic country and that we’re strong on human rights internationally, right? However, when it comes to us participating as a citizen in the voting process, we’re considered to be undeserving.***

And –

> ***All the attacks from the right is basically saying these people should continually be marginalised because of nothing else, because of their affiliation. And there’s something really, really reeks of fascism there.***

So claimed Mongrel Mob lifetime member Harry Tam in Wednesday’s *Herald* to defend his gang’s recent political engagement with Green and Māori Party MPs. Tam didn’t just miss the mark with his wailing, I say he rewrote reality.

Tam’s response is as fatuous and inane as it is profoundly incongruous and inappropriate. To hear a representative of the Mongrel Mob lecture New Zealand on “human rights” is a masterclass in political manipulation.

Democratic citizenship is a social contract **built on a mutual respect for the law and the rights of others**. The Mongrel Mob does not participate in and has no respect for that contract; in fact, it actively shreds it! While Tam uses high-minded rhetoric to demand a seat at the political table, the courts are consistently reminding New Zealanders of exactly what his “affiliation” represents.

Just look at the judiciary’s recent rap sheet for the Mob. In late 2025, Rameka Joseph Rangi-Te Rito, an associate of the Aotearoa chapter, was sentenced in the Christchurch High Court for **a brutal kidnapping and a hours-long hammer beating** that left a victim with a collapsed lung and shattered bones.

That same year, Operation Pakari exposed a vicious internal feud within the Mataura Mongrel Mob, resulting in six members being jailed for **drive-by shootings, kidnappings, and street violence** so severe that critically injured victims were dumped on hospital doorsteps.

These are not isolated incidents, nor are they a minor lifestyle choice. From the multi-region methamphetamine networks dismantled by police under Operation Highwater to the violent turf wars led by figures like Flaxmere “captain” Vinnie Herewini, the reality of the Mob is measured in community devastation, addiction, and terror.

When Tam complains that his peers are judged purely on their “affiliation”, he treats gang membership like a protected characteristic or an innocent hobby. But affiliation with the Mongrel Mob is a deliberate choice to wear a patch synonymous with organized and serious criminal activity.

The public is not marginalizing them for who they are: **they are judging them for what they choose to do.**

To label public scrutiny and political accountability as “fascism” is a cheap debating tactic designed to deflect from this reality. In a healthy democracy, citizens have every right to demand that their elected officials do not legitimize criminal enterprises.

True human rights belong to the victims of gang violence, the families torn apart by P, and the communities intimidated by the gang patch.

For Tam to invoke those rights to shield his organization from political criticism is not just pathetic – **it is an insult to the very concept of justice**.
