# How Bondi Was Allowed to Happen

It’s a shocking fact that’s little discussed, but we know perfectly well that the worst terror attack in US history was allowed to succeed because of political correctness and bureaucratic ineptitude. It is becoming more obvious that the same happened with Australia’s worst terror attack.

Journalist and academic **Steve Coll** states that “the resources the country mustered to prevent al-Qaeda terrorism were not proportionate to the scale of the threat”. The problem, he said, “germinated mostly during the Clinton administration”. Even the investigators who could see the outlines of a bigger conspiracy had little support from highest levels and didn’t receive the time, funding and support they needed.

Even worse, on the day the attacks unfolded, an airport security agent who was confronted by ringleader **Mohamed Atta** at a check-in desk immediately flagged him as exactly what he was: a textbook Muslim terrorist – and just as immediately mentally reprimanded himself for political incorrectness. So, he waved Atta through and more than 3000 people died.

Here in Australia, the same pattern of deaf ears and wilful blindness at the top of government led directly to Bondi.

Like that US airport security guy who looked into the eyes of Mohamed Atta and saw the seething hate, Burgess admits that he sometimes asks himself if he could have done more. “Could I have done more? Perhaps yes, I could have shouted stronger.”

And just have been ignored harder. Because, in the end, Burgess could only supply the warnings. Others had to take up the call. Challenge him. Act.

Except, those others were the likes of **Anthony Albanese** and a DEI-hire AFP commissioner who only had eyes for the ‘right wing’ bogey-men. The prime minister played tennis with the ultra-rich. The AFP commissioner blatherskited about ‘social cohesion’. Police told Jews to stay away from their own Opera House vigil. The thing Burgess named, the normalisation of Jew-hatred, was treated as less of a problem than so-called ‘Islamophobia’.

> “I was concerned about this and concerned about behaviours being normalised,” he said. “Those behaviours being normalised raised the temperature, which ­increased the permission for ­politically motivated violence and, sadly, we saw that: from threatening, intimidating behaviour through to direct targeting of people, businesses and places of worship, through to killings of Jewish Australians.”

He saw it on 8 October 2023 in western Sydney and the next night at the Town Hall and the sails. He knew the war was not confined to Gaza. Ten months later he told the government to lift the national threat level to “probable”: better than even money of an onshore attack within a year. Less than a fortnight before Bondi, a classified assessment warned that lone actors were the likeliest to hit crowded holiday places. Chanukkah by the Sea was exactly that.

Yet, while he was telling a Senate committee that antisemitism was “the No 1 priority in terms of threat to life”, the Albanese government was throwing money in precisely the wrong direction. Jihadists openly advocating anti-Jewish violence were showered with millions of dollars of taxpayers’ money. Counter-terrorism was simultaneously defunded: classified figures in Bondi Terror show counter-terrorism’s share of intelligence resourcing falling from 23 per cent in 2019–20 to under 16 per cent by 2025\. Funding across the community slid to about 19 per cent. ASIO’s baseline did not keep pace with inflation. None of the extra cash was ring-fenced for counter-terrorism. After the “probable” call in August 2024 there was no mid-year top-up in December and no serious bump in the March 2025 budget.

And the political elite remained blind to the foaming, screaming, anti-Jewish hate in the streets of Sydney and Melbourne, weekend after weekend.

> “We don’t understand the weight of this problem and until we understand that, we can’t really do something about it,” he said in the interview for Bondi Terror.

And they still refuse to understand. The AFP commissioner still flatly denies ‘religious motivation’ in Bondi – just ignore the ISIS flags. The Albanese government still showers millions on Muslim extremists, in the name of ‘social cohesion’. The government refused to even consider an antisemitism envoy unless it could appoint one for ‘Islamophobia’ – a hand-picked ‘moderate Muslim’ who now wants to silence any criticism of Islam and remove any mention of religion in counter-terrorism strategies.

We all know why.

The Albanese government also did everything it could to prevent even the token royal commission it had to be dragged, kicking and scheming, into finally setting up.

Again: we all know why.

Hindsight is not required. The ASIO director-general shouted in vain. Rabbis wrote letters in vain. Mothers wrote letters in vain. The threat level went up. The budget share went down. Bondi happened anyway.

Political correctness did not wave one man through a gate. It waved a whole country past a two-year warning and called the corpses a failure of social cohesion.
