Google announced Wednesday that it launched “Google Pay,” a system that enhanced the company’s program that accepted payments virtually.

*TechCrunch* [reported](https://techcrunch.com/2022/05/11/google-launches-google-wallet/?tpcc=tcplustwitter&guccounter=1&guce%5Freferrer=aHR0cHM6Ly90LmNvLw&guce%5Freferrer%5Fsig=AQAAAFHIFjQdYNub2Euk6BNh2ApPHrB8gPHHUEbjpVB9hU4SX8J4meKy8rdnVsWZSXxpmDJVa5OJlJIJS0fEBg1ZAw21E-aF8mBkrxEOzWk4JyRODf9kYMcJEZ7Ca5nTXP1S1nRyQBKFjjnw8IhSqaT6qhkb29MWosRQ-l4rlGm8K6DI&ref=goodoil.news) that Google had the “Google Wallet” for years, but a company spokesperson said the “Google Pay” app allowed consumers to store more personal information digitally, including credit cards.

“The Google Pay app will be a companion app to the Wallet,” Arnold Goldberg, VP and GM of Payments at Google, said according to *Tech Crunch*. “Think of \[the Google Pay app\] as this higher value app that will be a place for you to make payments and manage money, whereas the wallet will really be this container for you to store your payment assets and your non-payment assets.”

Goldberg added that the program was inspired by lifestyle changes forced on consumers by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We talk about ten years of change in two years from just a behavior perspective and people almost demanding now digitization versus it being a nice-to-have pre-COVID,” he told *Tech Crunch*. “It’s clarified our focus on what we need to do, as a payments organization — what we need to do as a company — to reimagine not just what we’re doing from a payments perspective online and in-store, but also thinking about what we can enable people to do with their digital wallets.”

*Tech Crunch* reported that Google Pay allowed users to store “credit cards, loyalty cards, digital IDs, transit passes, concert tickets, vaccination cards and more.”

New technology from Big Tech companies did not come without privacy concerns. *Newsbusters* [reported](https://www.newsbusters.org/blogs/free-speech/catherine-salgado/2022/03/04/googles-dystopian-future-tech-giants-radar-tech?ref=goodoil.news) earlier this year that Google used radar to detect body movements:

The Nest Hub detected both movements and breathing patterns of the sleeper, WIRED wrote. ‘The same Soli sensor is being used in this new round of research, but instead of using the sensor input to directly control a computer, ATAP is instead using the sensor data to enable computers to recognize our everyday movements and make new kinds of choices.’”

Last year, *Newsbusters* [reported](https://www.newsbusters.org/blogs/free-speech/catherine-salgado/2021/11/15/what-could-go-wrong-apple-bring-state-issued-digital?ref=goodoil.news) that Apple created a partnership with states to implement a digital ID program with key components under Apple’s “sole discretion.”

*The Verge* [reported](https://www.theverge.com/2022/5/11/23066215/google-virtual-credit-cards-chrome-autofill-privacy-io?ref=goodoil.news) that the company also announced that Google Chrome added an autofill payment system called “Virtual Card Numbers” that hid consumer credit card information during an online purchase.
