- Description: Young Israelis might be deserting Likud, but not for the left.

While the Western left are slowly coming to the realisation that Hamas has been profoundly kicked from the River to the Sea, they have tried to comfort themselves that at least the ‘far fight’ **Benjamin Netanyahu** is supposedly done for. Even the Israeli left, with the characteristic parasitism of left-wingers around the world, have done their best to undermine the Netanyahu government even as the slavering barbarians of Islam try to realise their dearest dream of wiping the Jewish state from the face of the Earth.

Yet, while polls indeed indicate that Netanyahu’s Likud party is potentially facing big losses in upcoming elections, it’s not exactly the victory party the left have been banking on.

For months, the Western press has salivated over the prospect of an inevitable reckoning at the ballot box. They envisioned a repentant electorate rushing into the arms of cosmopolitan moderates, eager to resume the tired, failed parlour game of the ‘two-state solution’. But reality, as is its stubborn habit, has declined to read the script provided by editorial boards in London and New York.

Instead of swinging toward the *kapo* left, or even the docile centre, the Israeli street has responded to existential terror by turning decidedly harder to the right. And spearheading that charge is a man who makes ‘Bibi’ look like an apologetic schoolmaster: National Security Minister **Itamar Ben-Gvir**.

Get ready for plenty of legacy media gibbering about the ‘far right’.

> [To much of the world](https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/israels-ben-gvir-poised-election-gains-young-voters-turn-far-right-2026-10-20/?ref=goodoil.news) and to many Israelis, Itamar Ben-Gvir, the bellicose face of Israel’s far right, is a figure from the fringe of politics, despite over four years in power as police minister in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.
>
> But with an election due next week, polls show a boost in his Jewish Power party’s support, reaching beyond its core of militant settlers in the occupied West Bank, to younger, urban voters who might once have considered him beyond the pale.

The establishment commentators who spent decades lecturing about ‘demographic shifts’ are now watching one unfold in real time, though hardly of the variety they fancied. According to polling from Jerusalem’s Hebrew University, a third of the supporters flocking to Ben-Gvir’s Jewish Power banner are first-time voters. These are young people raised in the shadow of relentless rocket barrages and the blood-soaked horrors of October 7\. They have zero patience for the sanctimonious platitudes of European diplomats, and they are utterly immune to the progressive guilt that paralyses Western capitals.

Ben-Gvir, who famously toasted his 50th birthday with a noose-themed cake and championed legislation making execution the standard penalty for convicted terrorists, has ceased to be an unmentionable oddity of the settler fringe. He is storming the bastions of urbane liberalism. Even in secular Tel Aviv, where the beautiful people once viewed him with unadulterated horror, voters are flocking to his unvarnished gospel of armed self-reliance. His aggressive expansion of civilian firearm permits has struck a chord with a traumatised public that discovered, in the most horrific fashion imaginable, that when the wolves breach the wire, the state’s cavalry is often hours away.

> Yet it is still too early to say whether Netanyahu’s opponents can finally unseat the most right-wing government in Israel’s history, thanks to a shift of many voters, especially the young, even further to the right.
>
> Opinion polls show both Netanyahu’s bloc and the main Jewish-led opposition parties, led by that of former military chief **Gadi Eisenkot**, falling short of securing a majority.
>
> But Ben-Gvir’s Jewish Power, which in 2022 relied on a joint list with two other far-right groups to be sure of making the threshold to win seats, is now forecast to win eight or more seats standing on its own.

That alone would elevate Ben-Gvir’s faction to parity with the Democrats, the pathetic, faded rump of the old Labour establishment that ruled the country for generations and still clings to the delusion of a negotiated partition. While his coalition partner **Bezalel Smotrich** has wobbled under voter resentment over military exemptions for seminary students, Ben-Gvir’s uncompromising posture has made him bulletproof among nationalist youth.

Naturally, the international order has responded with its usual ritualistic pearl-clutching. Western governments, including Australia and Britain, have slapped sanctions upon him, treating him as a pariah. But in the Levant, Western disapproval is no longer a deterrent – it is a campaign asset. The younger electorate has concluded that when you live in a neighbourhood populated by bloodthirsty fanatics, polite diplomatic decorum is a luxury for fools.

The Western left may yet get their wish to see Netanyahu humbled at the polls, but they are about to learn the ancient lesson of being careful what you wish for. In seeking to purge the old guard, they have merely cleared the stage for a generation that has abandoned compromise entirely, choosing unyielding strength over the phantom promises of international goodwill.
