**Capitalist**

Just when I thought the embarrassing amateurishness from the ACT Party couldn’t get any worse, David Seymour managed to find a way. He has challenged Maori Development Minister **Willie Jackson** to a debate on co-governance. Oh boy.

That sort of thing – debating – was always the trap American conservative grandee William F Buckley fell into. Ben Shapiro and others do it today. They seem to think that if only they make the right argument in a debate setting then lightning will strike, the left-wingers will see the error of their ways and all will be well.

The flip side of the coin is their sense of frustrated bewilderment when perfectly logical arguments – which admittedly are 100% correct – fail to sway opponents. People like Mr Seymour just cannot understand it!

Let me explain:

1\. Only amateurs think you succeed in politics by ‘persuasion’. You don’t. You succeed by lining up the votes ‘before’ you even announce anything in the first place.
2\. You are not dealing with opponents interested in logical arguments: let alone in making New Zealand a better place. They are interested in exercising power and implementing a socialist ideology. They simply don’t care whether it is good or bad.

If all that was required was to make a series of debating points, with logic, reason and a desire to select the best option for the country foremost in everyone’s mind, then we wouldn’t have a socialist state at all.

Read Hansard from the debate over the evil, pernicious Social Security Act 1938 and you will see that every National MP made excellent points in opposing the legislation, most famously described as “applied lunacy” by Sir Sidney Holland.

Warnings back in 1938 were issued which have all come to pass – just visit any state housing area and view the wasted, drug-addled, welfare-sated lives of miserable wretches living there – so why didn’t Nash, Nordmeyer et al. simply abandon the worst piece of legislation ever enacted (in terms of lives destroyed) by the New Zealand Parliament? They were still senior politicians two decades later, after all.

The reality is that left-wingers are not interested in anything David Seymour has to say. Every bad, damaging, or wicked policy initiated by Labour governments since 1935 has been widely debated in Parliament, the media, public meetings, and what is vaguely known as “the pub test”. Without exception, every single policy was predicted to be an economic and/or social disaster leaving New Zealand worse off. We, the good guys, ‘won’ the debates every single time and history (often unfortunately) proved us to be correct.

Such concerns were ignored by the socialists in numerous Labour governments. With these Labour politicians, the wiring had long since burnt out (or they wouldn’t be socialists). They lack the ability to reason or even conceive that they could be wrong.

Karl Marx and various paymasters require certain policies to be enacted – and they dutifully comply. Debating points are a tiresome irrelevancy. Frankly, David Seymour is wasting his time.
