What, exactly, her ‘de-radicalisation’ credentials actually are has long been an open question, given that her qualifications are in literature, early education and media. More pointedly, her most famous pupil, **Junaid Thorne**, an ISIS supporter and member of a jihadist group banned in Germany, was jailed after trying to slip out of Australia under a false name. Aly wrote a letter of support, persuading a court to soften his sentence. Thorne’s brother was one of five Muslims arrested for an almost comical plot to use a tinny to sail to ISIS. Aly later joined **Tony ‘Burqa’ Burke** in launching Labor’s flagship ‘de-radicalisation’ programme: the National Support and Intervention Program. It’s gone every bit as swimmingly as we might have expected. > [Of almost 300 extremists](https://www.theaustralian.com.au/nation/labors-flagship-75m-antiextremism-program-failing-to-reform-vast-majority-of-participants/news-story/809a29c10fbee055af54ccfeb20549f9?ref=goodoil.news) or people vulnerable to radicalisation enrolled in Labor’s $75m National Support and Intervention Program in the first half of the year, 227 were reported to have had “no change” in concern level. > > Increased concern was reported for 24 participants and decreased concern due to positive changes was reported for 23, according to departmental records seen by the Australian. So, not only did more participants become more extreme than less, but for over 90 per cent, the programme did nothing at all. Fifty-seven were waved through as having “successfully exited” (which sounds rather like they just stopped turning up). The department’s excuse is that most clients need two to three years to “reach their goals”. After *that*, presumably, we all get to hold hands and sing *Kumbaya*. Terrorism researcher **Clive Williams** was blunt. A programme worth the name would show sustained behavioural change for the majority, falling risk and gains that hold without a minder. “These numbers do not meet that bar.” They are, he said, the same mixed, limited evidence base you find wherever Western governments have tried to hug jihadis better. Labor’s Home Affairs department still can’t even say what ‘success’ looks like: There is “no nationally consistent definition of success”, they say. They are “developing a framework”. In other words, expect a whole lot of bureaucratic waffle about ‘KPIs’ and ‘engaging with key stakeholders’. Just don’t expect the swivel-eyed followers of the Prophet to get any less bomby-stabby. If you want the practical example of what “no change” in radicalisation actually looks like, Melbourne just served it up. > [Australian Federal Police](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-09-13/melbourne-man-charged-violent-extremist-material-airport-arrest/107148034?ref=goodoil.news) today charged 30-year-old **Mohammad Ahmadzai**, from Roxburgh Park in Melbourne’s outer-north, with possessing violent extremist material, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison. Ahmadzai was nicked at Melbourne Airport, en route to Afghanistan. Way back in May, he was jihadi-on-the-spot when the feds raided a Melbourne property, looking for someone else. His phone and tablet were seized and, lo and behold, contained material police “believed ‘met the threshold’ of violent extremist material”. Hmm: videos of beheadings, throat-cuttings, shootings, and mass-casualty footage? Well, if that doesn’t meet the threshold of “violent extremist material”, it’s hard to imagine what does. But that’s Muslim Australia for you: shake down any household and a whole lotta jihadis fall out. *Five* more, in this case. > [Four Melbourne men](https://www.theaustraliatoday.com.au/four-melbourne-men-charged-over-alleged-islamic-state-propaganda-network-sharing-violent-extremist-material/?ref=goodoil.news) have been charged after federal investigators allegedly uncovered the online sharing and distribution of Islamic State propaganda, including violent extremist videos and material linked to past terrorist attacks \[…\] > > AFP officers from a National Security Investigations (NSI) team \[…\] raided four homes in Roxburgh Park, Clyde South and Meadow Heights on Thursday, seized more devices, and arrested the 20- and 21-year-olds, and two men from Clyde North aged 19 and 29. A fifth was charged later, with ol’ mate Mohammad rounding up the jihadi half-dozen this week. He is the latest name in a chat group already used to charge a cluster of young Muslim men from Roxburgh Park, Meadow Heights and Clyde North with possessing and sharing Islamic State propaganda. We can always send them to Labor’s de-radicalisation school… whoops, too late: one of the defendants, **Sulaiman Sarwari**, had been on a voluntary deradicalisation program with the Board of Imams since 2017\. Eight years of pastoral care and police still found a machete, a beanie with Arabic writing and a laptop in the shed.
