**Jacinda Ardern** loves to witter nostrums about “kindness” and “well being”. But the reality of her reign is that actual kindness and well-being run a long last place to stage-managed photo ops and old-fashioned socialist cronyism.

On every front except propaganda, the Ardern government has failed miserably. Despite her personal pledge to take the lead in reducing child poverty, child poverty has worsened. Reducing New Zealand’s housing crisis has fared no better.

But it’s Ardern’s covid response — once lauded at home and abroad — which has brutalised New Zealanders to the point that not even throwing tens of millions of taxpayer dollars at a fawning media can stop her popularity sinking like a stone. Even the yapping chorus of agreement from a soaking wet “opposition” can’t drown out the growing rumblings of discontent.

> New Zealanders have been sold a pup. The economic, mental and emotional well-being of New Zealanders has been far from prioritised by her Labour coalition doing extraordinary damage – and determined on more of the same, judging from the controversial legislation it continues to ram through.

As the extraordinary crowds camped at the Beehive for the past week attest, ordinary Kiwis are finally rallying against the reign of the Queen of Kindness.

> Ardern’s Labour government has turned a blind eye to the sheer cruelty underpinning so much current policy. In this benighted country we have had a lottery with a totally inadequate number of managed isolation and quarantine (MIQ) places periodically opened for New Zealanders desperate to get home – some no longer with jobs, or being unable to pay rent overseas.
>
> Yet her government closed off this applications procedure, refusing to commit to when more MIQ facilities would become available.

The process wasn’t closed to everybody, though. The nomenklatura could always find the path smoothed for them, be they Hollywood directors, Silicon Valley billionaires, or musicians — especially those with the PM’s partner on speed dial. Or, if they managed to embarrass the government enough, pregnant journalists.

Overall, though, the defining characteristic of Ardern’s covid regime has been its **cold, bureaucratic cruelty.**

> Because of her government’s draconian control measures, thousands of businesses have been ruined – individuals and livelihoods destroyed beyond any chance of recovery \[…\] for any political leader invoking well-being to be overseeing so many sad or disgraceful incidents where people have been treated shockingly is unforgivable. What about the nightmare of a scheduled ten days in MIQ turning into 40 days and nights for a family catching Covid in turn, constantly having their imprisonment goalposts extended while restricted to two hotel rooms, and being allowed in an exercise yard for only thirty minutes a day? No wonder the children struggle, one little girl bursting into tears and crying she just wanted to go home – when told another 14 days lay ahead. Utterly inhumane – when they could be isolating at home.
>
> What of pensioners trapped overseas beyond the permissible date allowed, refused entry, threatened with having to pay back their pensions? What about the Kiwi hailed as a hero in an attempted robbery in 2019? His family of five left their Australian jobs last year, removing children in school, to return home to his dying mother. With the closing of our borders, they move from family to friends, living on their savings.
>
> Where has the concern been for the well-being of so many needy individuals desperate, even ill, both physically and mentally, being denied the ability to simply come home – even by self-isolating?

Ardern’s cold-hearted bloody-mindedness was for too long mistaken for artful management of a “tricky little virus”. But, as New Zealanders watch the rest of the world open up, the realisation that it was all just an exercise in authoritarian control seems to be sinking in. The massive protest convoy to Wellington is testament to the breadth and depth of disillusionment. No matter how much the mainstream media chirp in unison with Ardern’s blithe dismissal of the protesters, the sight of ordinary Kiwis, mums, dads and kids, singing and dancing and locking arms with dreadlocked hippies, and Maori, tells the real story.

As does Speaker **Trevor Mallard**’s high-handed, petty tactics: turning on sprinklers and blasting music from the roof of the parliament building. Scrambling to play catch-up and promises to allow home quarantine and to loosen the borders only makes the government look desperate and panicked, no matter how much Ardern and her media lap dogs try and dismiss the protesters.

The Ardern government has made a complete goose of itself. The opposition scarcely any better. The autocratic, or cowardly, refusal of any parliamentarian to so much as talk to the protesters only serves to underscore the detachment of the political class from the people.

New Zealand may indeed be ready for a “great reset” — but it may not be the one Klaus Schwab ordered.
