There’s a not unreasonable argument that, at certain times, the social temperature needs to be lowered and those holding the matches sent to the Naughty Corner. But ‘hate speech’ laws are always a dangerously fickle attack dog, even if leashed to a non-negotiable sunset clause. More importantly, if there’s a snake in the room, I like to know where it is. Well… good. > \[**Michael Radice**\] says he got into an argument with an employee at the shop who questioned him about his Jewish identity after he visited wearing a Star of David hat that included the phrase “The people of Israel live” in Hebrew. > > Radice says the returned to the shop a month later, ending in \[Abdulrahim\] Harara and other employees following him outside of the shop, calling him a “Jew” and “Zionist.” Imagine, though, if the coffee shop had been so intimidated by the prospect of ‘hate speech’ convictions that they never said any of that stuff openly? Does anyone think they wouldn’t still privately be antisemitic pieces of shit? Of course they would: they’d just be a whole lot quieter about it. The snake would stay out of sight behind the couch, but it wouldn’t be any less poisonous. So, let the antisemites out themselves, so we know where they are. Questions the *Oz* would never have even known to ask if this creep’s Jew-hating had been kept prudently to himself. His X feed is certainly not subtle. In the months after the Bondi Beach massacre he circulated *Age* ‘cartoonist’ **Cathy Wilcox**’s cartoon three times – the one the Press Council later found peddled antisemitic tropes. He announced he had attended the Town Hall protest against **Isaac Herzog**’s visit. The Israel Lobby (translation: ‘Da Joos’), he informed the timeline, had begun “howling”. Emboldened by free speech, he outed himself for all to see. He used the same account to talk shop and tag the college. Members noticed after he was already elected. His is not an inconsequential hate: the royal commission into antisemitism has been hearing that Jewish patients and staff in the health system already hide who they are. Deborah Bell of the Australian Zionist Healthcare Alliance made the obvious point: it is one thing when a junior colleague shares this sludge – it is another when the man in line to front the profession does it “particularly at a time when there’s been a Jewish massacre”. Virgona will now be reviewed. Good. The more interesting question is whether we would prefer he had never posted. Remember the Sydney nurses who filmed themselves boasting that they would kill Jewish patients. They were grotesque, but they were also useful. Once the videos were out, every Jewish family in the catchment knew not to trust that hospital with their mother. The system could not pretend the problem was ‘a few bad apples online’. The apples were on the roster and entirely comfortable airing their hate on break time, still wearing their scrubs. Would we rather those nurses had been frightened into silence by a hate-speech statute, kept their mouths shut and gone on treating – or misttreating – whoever came through the door and looked a bit ‘Heeby’? A quiet bigot with a drug chart is more dangerous than a loud one with a TikTok. The loud one you can take off the ward. The quiet one files the death as a complication. The same logic applies to a psychiatrist about to speak for an entire college. If Virgona’s posts are what they look like, Jewish patients and registrars are better off knowing the man at the top of the letterhead thinks a royal commission into their massacre is a Zionist howl. If the review finds otherwise, the record is still on the table. Either way the snake is on the lino, not under the bed. Hate-speech law would not have cured him. It would have taught him to whisper. Whispering doctors are how you get accidents that are not accidents. Better the cafe that calls you a Jew to your face and then shuts. Better the nurse who says the quiet part into a phone. Better the president-elect who cannot resist the cartoon.
