- Description: Funny how socialists always draw the ‘tax the rich’ line just over their own fortunes.

Remember when **Bernie Sanders** used to fulminate against ‘miyyonayrs’? Then he became one (thus proving **Harry S Truman**’s adage about men who become rich in politics) and the doddering socialist grifter’s war-cry change. Now it’s ‘biyyonayrs!’. Funny that.

New Greens leader **David Shoebridge** is 30 years younger than Bernie, but he’s made Comrade Sanders look like a rank amateur in the *nomenklatura* stakes. So, like his octagenarian fellow grifter, he’s carefully tailoring his ‘tax the rich’ rhetoric.

Because, as it turns out, Comrade Sanders is quite the Monopoly guy, collecting his own portfolio of investment properties. Or at least, on paper, it’s his wife whose the landlord. Funny that. One way or another, the Shoebridges are sitting on four multimillion-dollar properties.

So, of course, Shoebridge’s ‘let’s lynch the landlord’ rhetoric starts at five properties. Funny that.

Mr Shoebridge, fresh from seizing the reins of the inner-city eco-pious collective, recently took it upon himself to lecture the hoi polloi on the economic cruelties inflicted by the major parties. According to our immaculate silk-turned-senator, four years of Labor misrule have rendered the lucky country ‘a little meaner’. One must hand it to the man; he possesses a keen eye for the obvious, even if his diagnosis conveniently glosses over his own contributions to the landlord class.

When pressed on whether his own comfortable accumulation of residential real estate across Sydney’s most exclusive postcodes might disqualify him from lecturing the proletariat, our hero airily dismissed the inquiry. Voters, he insists, must look merely at the ‘substance’ of his politics rather than the concrete reality of his leveraged assets. How wonderfully convenient. One’s bricks and mortar are magically sanitised when the title deeds rest safely in the spouse’s portfolio, while hubby merely signs the mortgage documents as a gesture of romantic solidarity.

> [“We are saying](https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/national/a-little-meaner-new-greens-leader-david-shoebridge-takes-aim-at-labor-government/news-story/d12afcde2c6b3e03c008b6f1fe8b15d7?ref=goodoil.news) we need to fundamentally change the property market … How is it that people have got **5**, 10 or 20 investment properties and are keeping all these tax perks? It’s obscene.”

Thus spake Comrade Shoebridge, drawing an arbitrary moral boundary just a notch above his own portfolio. Those with five properties are villains of the highest order, no doubt, whereas four are merely a modest expression of domestic prudence. It is a posture of breathtaking chutzpah. Naturally, when quizzed on the various negative gearing and capital gains tax concessions utilised to amass this urban real estate empire, the senator suddenly developed a severe case of diplomatic amnesia, declining to enlighten the peasantry.

Yet Shoebridge’s existential angst extends far beyond local property portfolios – it reaches all the way to the geopolitical drawing rooms of Sydney. While he bewails the working class’s regrettable desertion of the progressive plantation in favour of One Nation, whose commonsense appeal to ordinary Australians clearly haunts his nocturnal reveries, our radical internationalist has been busy cultivating rather colourful company.

> [A Greens senator](https://www.theaustralian.com.au/nation/politics/mps-dinner-date-with-russian-envoy/news-story/ce599c36017ce04381618bef23199ccb?ref=goodoil.news), a NSW Liberal minister and the president of the NSW Liberal Party dined with the Russian ambassador at an event in Sydney this month, a week after Vladimir Putin issued his nuclear threat against Ukraine.

Yes, while Moscow rattles its nuclear sabres and the civilised world pulls faces at the Kremlin’s representatives, our intrepid Greens justice spokesman saw fit to break bread with the Russian envoy at a Sydney banquet. Naturally, the Ukrainian ambassador was left off the guest list: an oversight so glaring it would be comical if it were not so profoundly revealing.

Now, I’ve also opposed military aid to Ukraine – and to Russia. My grounds are simple: this is none of our business, and Western meddling is only prolonging a war that should have been settled years and hundreds of thousands less deaths ago and will almost certainly be settled along the lines of the present stalemate anyway.

Perhaps the Greens base their policy on similarly dispassionate grounds. But that would require ignoring not just their full-throated support for the combatants in an another, far more morally clear-cut war, but the apparent stunning coincidence of their Dear Leader having drinkies with Russia’s Man in Canberra, just days before. Coincidence? Only if one believes in fairies at the bottom of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Offices.

So there we have it. A barrister-turned-politician sitting comfortably atop a multi-million-dollar property empire, wringing his hands over the cost of living while supping with Kremlin emissaries and decrying anyone who dares question his radical orthodoxies. It is a magnificent performance.

The Greens have a new Dear Leader, and he is every bit as hypocritical as every other socialist grandee.
