# Machete Bins Are Vic’s Last Growth Industry

Well, you can’t say Labor haven’t racked up the goals, in Victoria. They’ve made it the most potholed state in Australia. As [*Drive* magazine’s data](https://www.drive.com.au/caradvice/one-star-rating-these-are-australias-most-dangerous-roads/?ref=goodoil.news) showed, “Victoria overwhelmingly leads all states and territories analysed when it comes to the worst roads in the country.” They’re so bad that the potholes can actually kill people.

Then there’s the debt. Victoria leads the pack by a potholed country mile, there, too: $165 billion in debt. Over $60 billion ahead of the next closest, NSW. Victorians are paying $23 million a day in just interest on its debt alone.

Then there’s the crime. From the top down, Victoria is the Criminal State. Whether it’s a government that pays criminal bikie gangs to monster workers on its own projects, or a group of ‘diverse’ teens running amok with machetes, when it comes to crime, Victoria is in a jail cell of its own. Or it would be, if its magistrates didn’t immediately bail every murderer, rapist and machete maniac – mostly, in their defence, because the magistrates are only doing what the Labor government has instructed them to.

The investment world, usually a rather tepid collection of spreadsheet-worshippers, has finally arrived at a conclusion long held by the poor, beleaguered souls actually forced to live in this jurisdiction: Victoria is, for all intents and purposes, a “criminal’s dream state”. It is not merely a failure of policy, but a deliberate surrender of the social contract. **Chris Garnaut**, who oversees a five-billion-dollar portfolio of retail assets, has finally reached his tether’s end. He is currently orchestrating an investment strike, quite rightly noting that his capital is better deployed anywhere else on this God-forsaken continent.

One does not need to be a forensic accountant to see the writing on the wall. When a retail environment becomes a free-for-all, where one’s physical safety is subordinate to the whims of the local light-fingered fraternity, the economy ceases to be a functional mechanism and becomes a theatre of the absurd. The major retailers – those giants of industry – are now left to beg the state for the basic privilege of existing without being routinely assaulted. It is a damning indictment that while the rest of the nation looks on with a mixture of pity and bewilderment, the Victorian government insists on playing its own distinctive brand of progressive roulette.

Consider the testimony of the industry itself, which is not prone to hyperbole, yet currently finds itself in a state of genuine alarm:

If the retail sector is the canary in the coal mine, the judiciary has effectively strangled the bird and tossed it into the furnace. The government’s legislative efforts – if one can call them that – have been less of a crackdown and more of a polite suggestion to the criminal class to perhaps consider slowing down on a Tuesday.

The rot, however, goes deeper than shoplifting. It reaches into the very nursery of our future criminality. By neutering the Children’s Court, the state has ensured that the next generation of delinquents will grow up with the secure knowledge that the law is a paper tiger. We are witnessing a systemic dismantling of accountability under the guise of ‘social progress’.

From Wednesday, those under the age of 14 who are convicted of lesser criminal offences can no longer be sentenced to detention, even if the Children’s Court believes they are a serious risk to community safety.

It is a truly spectacular achievement of modern governance. While the auditor-general notes that 40 million dollars has been poured into ‘crime-prevention’ programmes with precisely zero results, the state continues to double down. They have effectively granted a license to roam to the youth, relying on the ancient, dusty doctrine of *doli incapax –* the presumption that a child lacks the mental capacity to understand right from wrong. In practice, this has become a cloak of invisibility for the young offender. As one magistrate recently noted, successfully rebutting this presumption in Victoria has become a statistical impossibility.

The result is a culture of impunity that starts in the shopping aisles and ends in our courtrooms. Our leaders, obsessed with a humanitarian veneer, have abandoned the primary purpose of the state: the protection of the innocent. They have shackled the courts and invited the wolves in. Until the taxpaying public stops voting for this theatre of the absurd, we shall continue to watch the potholes deepen, the debt climb and the machete-wielding ‘teens’ roaming the streets with the confidence of an establishment that knows it is effectively untouchable. It is a bleak, potholed road ahead and one for which there is no immediate detour.
