After all, where have been the subsequent attacks and intercepted plots? If there had been, it would have been all over the news, surely? Pay no attention to ASIO’s warning that the next terror attack is ‘expected’ any day. Not if the Albanese government has anything to do with it. In shocking news this week, it emerged that, in the months following Bondi, ASIO intercepted no less than FOUR “major” terrorism plots. They just didn’t want to tell anyone about it. > [ASIO has disrupted](https://www.theaustralian.com.au/nation/four-major-terror-plots-since-bondi-attack-but-public-kept-in-the-dark/news-story/531cedf716582c28bd05fa0da56677f1?ref=goodoil.news) four “major” terrorism plots since last December’s Bondi massacre but the public has been kept in the dark on the full details, prompting calls for greater transparency from the ­Albanese government. > > The alleged schemes were all thwarted in the first six months of the year, underscoring warnings by the director-general of security, **Mike Burgess**, that the ­nation’s security environment is degrading amid soaring levels of grievance and intolerance. > > ASIO classifies terrorism plots as “major” when an attack is ­imminent or its planning is at an advanced stage. This begs the question of how many ‘minor’ plots are fomenting on messenger apps and in living rooms, right now. Even so, we now know there were at least four more terror attacks ready to roll, in just six months after the worst terror attack in Australian history. These four were all stopped in the first half of the year. Five males were charged, three of them teenagers. And yet the public was left to guess. Planned targets were released in only one case. None of the four were formally flagged as major terrorism threats in the Australian Federal Police’s press statements. The government, desperate not to lose more votes in Western Sydney, said nothing. > The AFP subsequently confirmed four major plots had been averted since the Bondi attack. Those charged included: > > • A 20-year-old man from the West Australian town of Bindoon, arrested in February for ­allegedly planning to attack mosques in the state, as well as WA Police Headquarters and WA Parliament House; > > • Two boys, aged 15 and 16, ­arrested in the NSW town of Moree in April, who allegedly accessed extremist material online; > > • A 13-year-old NSW boy ­arrested in April for allegedly making a document connected with terrorism and possessing ­violent extremist material; > > • And a 24-year-old man from Bellbowrie, Queensland, arrested in January for allegedly suspicious online activity and accused of planning terrorist acts. It’s telling that, even now, they still won’t tell us anything worth knowing about the plots. The one plot they *did* describe in any detail is instructive. A 20-year-old from Bindoon in Western Australia, arrested in February, allegedly planned attacks on mosques, WA Police Headquarters and Parliament House. That one got names, places and a convenient ideological tag. The other three – two boys aged 15 and 16 in Moree, a 13-year-old in NSW, a 24-year-old in Bellbowrie – remain little more than ages, suburbs and the vaguest mention of “extremist material” or “suspicious online activity.” Funny, that. Given that the Albanese government has not been shouting the other post-Bondi plots from the rooftops, it is safe to assume they were not the ‘far-right’ ‘Islamophobic’ bogeymen ministers keep lecturing the rest of us about. If a gang of skinheads had been an hour from torching a synagogue or a polling booth, you would have heard about it before the cuffs were on. Silence is the tell. Burgess’s own words give the game away. “The conflict in the Middle East contributed to this,” he said. Of the terror attacks and known plots of the past 25 years in Australia, around 90 per cent have been Islamic. That is not a talking point – it is the sentencing record. > Former Home Affairs secretary **Mike Pezzullo** said **Anthony Albanese** and Home Affairs Minister **Tony Burke** needed to be more upfront with the public about the deteriorating security environment. > > “It’s really a matter for the prime minister and the minister to make a statement, preferably to the parliament, laying out in very sombre, clinical terms how many serious, imminent attacks were foiled at the last moment, and their ­locations and intended targets,” he said. > > Opposition home affairs spokesman **Jonno Duniam** said the spike in serious terrorism plots reflected “a national security crisis”. Remember: these were just the “major” plots. Since Bondi, ASIO and police have disrupted 16 serious but less imminent plots. Since 2014 the tally of major schemes foiled stands at 33: two more than he announced in June, because a couple of earlier cases were later upgraded. The quieter cases, the ones that never quite reach the “imminent” threshold, never make the evening news, let alone a government press release, at all. Australians are not children. They can handle the truth that the people who keep trying to murder them are, overwhelmingly, the same people who have been trying for a quarter of a century.
