# The BFD Comment of the Week

My thoughts on what is happening in Ukraine. I am a watcher & never try to have an opinion because that might influence how I evaluate the information that is being filtered to me. Yes, it is being filtered, sometimes Russia owns the information space & sometimes Ukraine does.

What we have learnt so far: –

Miss direction. In August last year while the west/ north bank of the Dnieper river in the Kherson region was still occupied by Russia, Ukraine loudly pronounced that they were about to free it. Russia moved its forces into that area but then Ukraine struck in the north in the Kharkiv region liberating 12,000 sq km in a matter of days.

Logistics: Russian had 1,000’s of troops on the west / north bank of the Dnieper. Ukraine set about destroying their supply routes & engaged Russian forces in aggressive combat. Russian was consuming its supplies faster than they could be replaced, so had to withdraw.

For the last few months Ukraine has been engaged in both an information war & a shaping war. The information war is that everywhere you look, there is information that Ukraine is about to launch a spring offensive in the Zaporizhzhia region. At the opening stages of the counter offensive, it has done just that.

The shaping war:. For many weeks Ukraine has been launching intensive missile & rocket attacks on Russian supply routes & hubs supplying Russian forces in Zaporizhzhia. They are currently engaging Russian forces & resupply will become a question.

Miss Direction: While the focus has been on Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine has advanced by 6km in Donetsk.
