- Description: Rain, hail or shine: they’ll blame it all on ‘climate change’.

Con-men and charlatans rely on simple human psychology in order to get away with what should otherwise be obvious scams. A rigorous accounting of the stage-charlatanry of fake ‘psychics’ like **John Edward** proves beyond doubt that they’re simply guessing – and overwhelmingly getting the guesses wrong. Yet, the rapid-fire patter and the willing gullibility of the audience means that most of their marks don’t even notice.

The same phenomenon is exploited to the hilt by end-of-the-world cultists. None more assiduously than the Climate Cult.

Case in point, the *Guardian* [was hyperventilating that](https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/jul/04/spain-and-portugal-suffering-driest-climate-for-1200-years-research-shows?ref=goodoil.news) then-droughts proved that “Spain and Portugal are suffering their driest climate for at least 1,200 years.” To the surprise of absolutely no one with half a brain, the Grauniad’s cultists were as embarrassed in short order as Australia’s prophet of doom, **Tim ‘It’ll never rain again!’ Flannery**.

The rains in Spain duly fell, by the bucketload. Undeterred, the Cultists simply switched up their patter: the *Guardian* duly shrieked that:

> [The unnatural disaster](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/nov/02/spain-apocalyptic-floods-climate-crisis-worse-big-oil-cop29?ref=goodoil.news) in Spain – Europe’s deadliest flash floods in at least half a century – is evidence of two undeniable truths: the human-caused climate crisis is just starting to pick up ferocity, and we need to quickly kill the fossil fuel industry before it kills us.

Climate Change: it’s like Homer Simpson’s donuts – there’s nothing it can’t do. If it’s dry: climate change! If it’s flooding: Definitely climate change! If it’s a touch cloudy with a chance of sunshine: oh, you better believe that’s climate change!

If only the pesky real world would go along with the fancy computer models and the Climate Cult’s deranged certainties. A study published in *Nature* last year analysed long-term rainfall data in the Mediterranean and found that no statistically significant long-term trends exist.

Of course, like any phenomenon you want to ‘prove’, the starting-point matters a lot. Count from 1871 in Spain, for example: almost no trend in rainfall. Shift the goalposts to 1951, though, and the Cultists can be excused for getting excited: a statistically significant decrease (p <0.05).

Ah, but we’re not done yet! Shift the goalposts again to 1981 (remember: the climate boffins have ruled that 30 years is a ‘climate cycle’) and the trend switches to an equally statistically significant increase (p <0.05 again).

It seems the gods of the atmosphere are not quite as interested in the Climate Cult’s apocalyptic narrative as one might hope. As the researchers in the *Nature* study noted, the data suggests that these trends are merely ripples in a very large, very stable pond.

> [Here we show that](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-024-08576-6.pdf?ref=goodoil.news) Mediterranean precipitation has largely remained stationary from 1871 to 2020, albeit with significant multi-decadal and interannual variability. This conclusion is based on the most comprehensive dataset available for the region, encompassing over 23,000 stations across 27 countries. While trends can be identified for some periods and subregions, our findings attribute these trends primarily to atmospheric dynamics, which would be mostly linked to internal variability.

One must admire the sheer chutzpah of the alarmists. They select a specific window – usually starting just after the post-war period: purely coincidentally, no doubt, coinciding with the youth of the Boomer elder statesmen of Climatism – where the numbers conveniently tilt in the direction of disaster, and they brandish it like a holy relic. Meanwhile, they ignore the broader canvas of history, which reveals a climate as capricious and fickle as a scowling Swedish teenager’s cause *du jour*, yet fundamentally balanced over the centuries.

> Our statistical analysis underscores the substantial temporal and spatial variability in precipitation patterns throughout the Mediterranean region. Annual precipitation trends exhibit notable disparities, in terms of their sign, magnitude and statistical significance, when distinct analysis periods are considered. Although some stations and periods show statistically significant trends, the overarching pattern is the prevalence of nonsignificant trends. Indeed, even during the periods marked by the most pronounced changes, such as 1951–2020, the proportion of stations exhibiting statistically significant trends remains below 15 per cent of the total.

The Cultists, of course, will never mention this. To acknowledge that the climate is stationary would be to admit their entire business model – carbon taxes, wind turbines, and the de-industrialisation of the West – is based on a fallacy. They prefer the ‘managed decline’ of our civilisation, an agenda that is far more transparent than the shifting winds they claim to be tracking.

The researchers conclude by almost shamefacedly dismantling the hysterical screeching of the mainstream media’s favourite doom-mongers, noting that their work does not confirm the catastrophic narratives pushed by those currently wetting themselves over a rainy day in Valencia.

> Although some research has suggested a drying trend in precipitation with a significant influence from anthropogenic forcings, our findings do not support this claim. The results indicate that historical precipitation trends are dependent on the time frame, exhibit strong spatial variability, and are primarily stationary over the long term, whether examined annually or seasonally. These conclusions echo the findings of multi-centennial studies based on data from limited meteorological stations in the northern part of the Mediterranean region, which are marked by their long-term stability and a predominance of pronounced multi-decadal and interannual variability.

There you have it. The climate is not in a death spiral: it is simply doing what it has always done, regardless of how much CO₂ we pump into the air or how many private jets the global elite take to their next climate gala. But do not expect the *Guardian* to issue a correction. Charlatans rarely apologise, especially when the scam is paying so handsomely.
