In a recorded conversation while canvassing, the former Taoiseach warned that Ireland was taking in too many people from places like the Congo and that the real problem would come with the next generation of Muslims, the children growing up here, not the first arrivals. Mr Ahern pointed to the disorder and radicalisation already visible in France and Britain. He also said there were too many coming from places like the Congo and the likes. Party figures and the Taoiseach quickly pushed him back into line.

The evidence in France shows he was describing a pattern that is already playing out. The 2023 riots after the death of Nahel Merzouk saw more than 5,000 vehicles burned, nearly 1,000 buildings and shops damaged or looted, and police stations attacked, largely by young men of second- and third-generation Maghrebi background who hold French citizenship. In mid-October 2026, during unrest near Place de la République, an elderly couple in their 80s was reportedly robbed of their valuables and clothing and left nearly naked on the street. Shopkeepers and natives watch cars, businesses, and basic security destroyed while the same generational pattern repeats.

Nobody in Ireland ever said people were not welcome. But the country is changing demographically at a rapid pace through inflows of Sub-Saharan Africans, Pakistanis, Indians and others, via both illegal routes and legal channels. A new Temporary Protection Transition Scheme, opened at the end of September, now lets eligible Ukrainians move from temporary protection to a renewable Stamp 4 permission that counts toward naturalisation and citizenship. Around 100,000 have arrived under the broader temporary protection route. Other European countries have already shown that certain origin groups and their descendants produce persistently higher rates of crime, parallel societies and integration failure, especially into the second and third generations. France is the clearest nearby example.

Selective policy is required: welcome those who integrate and contribute, but apply stricter controls on demographics that have repeatedly failed to do so elsewhere. Money continues to go abroad while the domestic budget left ordinary people with little relief. The government cut carbon tax on home heating oil by only about €40 a fill, against prices that have reached €1,600–1,700 for larger volumes, while elderly people who paid tax all their lives risk going cold. At the same time, large numbers of asylum applicants, many of them economic opportunists, up to 80 per cent by Micheál Martin’s own admission, are housed in hotels with heat and three meals a day, paid for by the same taxpayers.

Stronger borders and faster removal of those with no right to be here are required now. Without them, Ireland risks importing the same second- and third-generation disorder already on display in France. Bertie pointed to the warning. The burned cars, looted shops and exposed elderly on a Paris street confirm it. Do something about the numbers, the pathways and the selection criteria before it is too late.
