In one of the few sit-down interviews allocated us, we learnt just how our beleaguered leader believes Kiwis should now accept endeavour over outcome.

On Q&A this month Jack Tame highlighted to Jacinda Ardern her failings in mental health and housing, the mess that is the polytech merger and how the likes of KidsCan say child poverty is at an all-time high.

He could have added Labour’s inability to curb living costs or their own spending, improve education and health outcomes or reduce crime, and the prolonged folly that was the elimination strategy.

Ardern’s smug reply was “You know what, I would not ever change the fact that we have always throughout been highly *aspirational.*

“What you are asking me essentially is to shy away from aspiration. Set targets lower… because at the end your scorecard might say you achieved it because you set out to do nothing.”

The trouble we should have with this is she was voted in on these “aspirations” back when they were election promises.

Imagine your kid, saying he had had every intention of cleaning his room but says the mess remaining should not bother you because he had told you he had “aspired” to do it.

Jack Tame summed it up well by saying she had achieved “An A for aspiration and an E for execution”.

If I had voted for her based on what she said she would achieve, I’d be more than brassed off.
