There’s nothing exactly new about media beat-ups, of course. What’s new, in the clickbait age, is the frenzied intensity. The legacy media are increasingly locked into the tiniest world imaginable – one whose boundaries are rigidly defined by tiny cliques of Twitter followers (ludicrously dubbed “the internet” by legacy media hacks) and a handful of hipster inner-city cafes. At the same time, the legacy media is overwhelmingly stuffed by tiny-brained Millennials for whom a different opinion is intolerable violence. As a consequence, the legacy media has become a constant feed of hysterical shrieking over trivial slights and the most ludicrous beat-ups imaginable. > A One Nation candidate has come under fire after pictures emerged showing her husband dressed up in blackface. Except, he wasn’t. “Blackface” is a very specific thing: the grotesque caricature of shiny black greasepaint with pop-eyed white circles and rubber-tyre lips. So, we have a stepfather and stepson clowning around together – one of whom is notably dark-featured and clearly entirely relaxed with the dad-joke antics. Nobody cares. Another one for the Who the Hell Cares? Files, there’s this wally: > A Canadian wellness coach is facing deportation from Bali after performing a haka naked on a sacred mountain. > > **Jeff Craigen** posted a video of himself on social media naked atop Mount Batur, attempting a performance of Ka Mate. > > Mount Batur is considered sacred by many Balinese, after a volcanic eruption in 1926 wiped out an entire village – but left the mountain’s shrine intact. > > “When you strip naked without shame and the fear of being seen, you become a fearless child of God,” Craigen said in his video. So, the typical, vacuous inanity of the Instagram generation, but… who cares? Alleged comedian **John Oliver** can set up a mock church, **Sarah Silverman** can blither, “I hope the Jews did kill Christ; I’d do it again” and *CNN*’s oleaginous **Don Lemon** can sneer at Christians – and the media-left will dutifully whoop and holler. But ‘appropriate’ the superstitions of a stone-age culture and the same media-left have a meltdown – invariably in a mangled jargon of te Reo. > Hundreds of social media users in Aotearoa have since weighed in as well.
