Etymology : 1660s, “sickly, nauseated” (a sense now obsolete), from Middle English mawke “maggot” (early 15th century; see maggot), but the literal sense of “maggoty” is not found. Figurative meaning “sickeningly sentimental, insipid” is recorded by 1702.
