# Written in Stone, Stored on the Wind

In *Hollow Places*, his fascinating exploration of English history, folklore and cultural memory – at least, as encapsulated in a single county, Hertfordshire – **Christopher Hadley** cites an anecdote of a parson observing a stonecutter at work. Such laborious work, the parson remarked, must be boring. The stonecutter retorted that “he does not know the interest in making something permanent: a stone that will go into a building and there outlast many generations”.

Such were the men who built the incredible Gothic cathedrals that still awe us today. Such work didn’t just outlast generations – its very creation spanned them. The very concept bewilders we moderns, conditioned as we are to near-instant gratification. We marvel at our own ability to knock up gleaming megastructures in, at most, a few years.

How many of these modern marvels, though, will be around in 50 years, let alone a hundred? Let alone 5,000, like the Great Pyramid.

We also dazzle ourselves with the speed and scale of our knowledge creation: chats, books, films, photos. We now accumulate as much raw data in a year as it once took humanity millennia.

Yet, discovering new knowledge alone was not enough for civilizational progress. To accumulate and build on discoveries across generations, humanity needed a way to encode knowledge onto a medium outside of our collective nervous system. From etching hieroglyphs into stone to digitally controlling electrons in modern solid-state drives (SSDs), humanity’s advancement in creating affordable, lightweight, and reliable data storage is astonishing.

This begs two questions: how much of it is worth keeping, anyway? And how much of it will survive even a few decades?

Before writing, knowledge lived in one skull at a time. When Joe Hunter-Gatherer took an arrow, the Great Elder’s story vanished with him. Almost all of prehistory is gone for that reason.

Stone changed the game. The Rosetta Stone’s surviving Greek text – about 5,800 characters – works out at roughly 0.19 bits per gram. Papyrus, parchment and paper then did what agrarian civilisation required: more density, faster throughput. The *Magna Carta* sits around 4,000 bits per gram. A *King James Bible* on ordinary paper reaches about 34,400\. Then magnetism and silicon arrived. A 10TB hard drive manages 53 billion bits per gram. A 4TB SSD hits a trillion bits per gram: some 5.3 trillion times denser than the Rosetta Stone.

And is just as easily blown away.

A professional stonecutter scratched out 0.044 bits per second. You read at a pace of roughly 160\. An SSD rips along at 112 billion. We have multiplied density by trillions in five thousand years, most of that gain in the last 70\. The same *King James* text carved in stone would weigh 185 tons. On a chip it is less than dust.

Dust that a single large solar flare could wipe from nearly every data centre on the planet. The same flare will not so much as warm the surface of a Rosetta Stone. Clay tablets from 3,400 BC are still readable. Last year’s cloud backup is one Carrington Event, one EMP, one unnoticed firmware rot, one company going bust, from not existing at all.

We have traded permanence for convenience and called it progress. The cathedral masons accepted that they would never see the spire finished. We cannot accept that a file might outlive the format it was saved in. Most of what we store is not knowledge in any case: it is noise, vanity and the digital equivalent of shopping lists.

The stonecutter understood the point. The thing had to last. The effort of making something last meant that it would be something worth bothering with. We have built a civilisation on media that will not last. Is it worth keeping? Future archaeologists might be the judges of that – if they could ever recover anything useful from a thousand-year-old thumb drive.

When the lights go out, the pyramids and the cathedrals will still be there. The digital grain of sand will not.
