## 1\. New Zealand Digital ID Plans Surface As Online "Safety" Bill Stumbles

- 📜 New Zealand's Online Safety (Minimum Age and Child Safety Risk Assessment) Bill was introduced on 24 August 2026 and is stalled. ACT and New Zealand First will vote against it. Parliament is due to dissolve before the 7 November election.
- 📂 Documents Newstalk ZB obtained under the Official Information Act show the Department of Internal Affairs has been exploring ways of linking digital ID with online age verification, as part of the country's wider digital identity work.
- 🔞 The bill would require platforms to take reasonable steps so New Zealanders under 16 cannot have social media accounts. Typing an age would not be enough. Platforms could not rely solely on formal ID, and would have to offer alternatives such as facial age estimation or inferences from activity, account or device attributes.
- 🗣 David Seymour called it a terrible solution that will inevitably lead to widespread online identification. Any system strong enough to stop teenagers, he said, will start asking a lot more of everybody else.
- 🚫 New Zealand First said there is no method that would fulfil the intent without banning VPNs or using digital ID to enforce the law. It called Australia's attempt a colossal failure and warned of some sort of soviet era outcome.
- 🪪 A February 2026 briefing for Education Minister Erica Stanford described a digital Kiwi Access Card that could support future age-assurance rules. The Govt.nz wallet, officials said, could prove you are over 16 without handing over a full birth date, via selective disclosure.
- 📱 Covered: user-to-user platforms with recommenders, endless feeds, or social AI companions. Generally out, with examples listed: WhatsApp, Discord, Roblox, Minecraft, Spotify and LinkedIn.
- ⚖ The regulator would sit inside DIA. Maximum penalty: the greater of NZ$40 million or 10 percent of global turnover. Some offences: up to 12 months in prison or a NZ$500,000 fine.
- 🎯 Takeaway: the bill is stuck. Macon's point is that the identity kit is still being assembled.

## 2\. Accountability lost

- 🏛 Accountability is a cornerstone of a successful democracy, O'Connor writes, and it is rarely discussed while public debate is swallowed by artificial intelligence, social media and the causes of political division.
- 🇳🇿 New Zealand still has the good fortune to be a high-trust society, fraying at the edges. He traces that to the Westminster inheritance and to Judeo-Christian norms. Compare, he says, countries with high corruption and distrust.
- 💻 First exhibit: MBIE's failed IT project, tens of millions wasted, the minister kept in the dark. Officials including chief executive Nic Blakeley at best misled a select committee, at worst lied. Parliament has since found contempt.
- 🚫 No further action, because an apology had been given. Sir Brian Roche declined Blakeley's resignation on the basis he was relatively new. O'Connor: the resignation should have been accepted. 'I am sorry' is not accountability when Parliament was misled and millions were wasted.
- 🌋 Mount Maunganui landslides: the council had been warned of the risks over 25 years. Six people died. The current chief executive, eight years in the job, has not resigned. He says he is somehow best placed to fix things now.
- 🗣 As he writes, Green MP Tamatha Paul continues to make claims that are demonstrably incorrect, including wrongly accusing another MP of owning property he does not own. He also lists Police leadership scandals, an activist judiciary, a narrative-first media, and church scandals.
- ⚖ Name suppression for high-profile accused, he says, is becoming regular rather than exceptional. A two-tier system based on social standing, wrong legally and morally, and corrosive of trust.
- 🗂 A rare tick: the Prime Minister and, eventually, the Minister for Social Development apologised for errors around welfare payments. As he finished writing, the Moa Point report landed. Another major Wellington disaster. Still no accountability.
- 🎯 Takeaway: trust is hard won and easily lost. Without consequences, he writes, cynicism grows and confidence erodes.

## 3\. HIV HOGWASH

- 📢 On 23 April 2026, Associate Health Minister Matt Doocey announced a Health New Zealand advertising campaign, running to the end of September, sold as a bid to reduce alleged widespread stigma against New Zealanders with HIV.
- 📺 Catchcry: The 80s Calling. David sees Sarah hugging a man. An unnamed woman completes the sentence, HIV, and hands him an oversized brick phone so he can brief the 1980s.
- 💊 The ad: hugging, kissing and sharing food are all good. With the right treatment, people with HIV stay well and cannot pass it to sexual partners, so there is no need to freak out.
- 🧾 The invented reason, McLean writes, repeated like a mantra: research shows around three-quarters of New Zealanders still hold HIV-related stigma. There is obviously no such research. The whole premise, he says, is a lie.
- 📊 He calls it misrepresentative to make the HIV-afflicted person a woman. At least 85 percent of New Zealanders who have ever contracted HIV, he writes, did so as men who had penetrative sex with men.
- 💰 An OIA reply put the campaign at well over a million dollars, GST unclear, excluding Health NZ staff time. Money, he says, that could have gone on medicines including antiretroviral drugs.

## 4\. Down With Freedom!

- 📺 From a CNN panel. Kmele Foster: it is one thing not to think capitalism is working ideally, another to insist it is oppressive and bound up with white supremacy. Jemele Hill: How is it not?
- ⚖ Once, Taibbi writes, conservatives stumped for economic freedom and liberals for personal autonomy. Keep the state out of the bedroom. Keep government paws off the economy.
- 📜 Because left and right had to appeal to the Constitution to protect their own vision of freedom, each side had to begrudgingly recognise the rights of the other, at least from time to time.
- 🚫 Those days are over. Freedom itself is now a bad word, synonymous with Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and not much else.
- 🎙️ The biggest critics of the free market, he writes, are leftist podcasters who are just erotophobe cousins of OnlyFans capitalists.
- 🏛 Tempting to blame academia or media dingbats like Hill. Not their fault alone. If the downfall of capitalism happens, and the rise of DSA-type politicians makes it a real possibility, it will be executives and politicians who chose to trade freedom for cash.

## 5\. Decades Of Ice-Related Climate Misinformation Drove False Claim That Glacier Collapse, Rather Than Bedrock, Caused Nepal Disaster

- 🏔 After the Nepal floods, scientists and journalists immediately said anthropogenic climate change had melted a glacier and triggered the disaster.
- 📰 New York Times, 27 August, headline: Climate Change Raises Risk of Disasters Like Nepal Floods. As humans warm the planet by burning fossil fuels, it said, the Himalayas are losing their permafrost, destabilising the foundation underneath glaciers.
- 🧪 Ashim Sattar of IIT Bhubaneswar: a very straight link between climate change and these types of disasters. Alton Byers of the University of Colorado: permafrost has been the cryospheric glue, now weakened by warming. Three days later the Times told readers one thing seems certain: the risk of such events is increasing.
- 🛰 New satellite imagery, the free cut says, shows the bedrock beneath the glacier collapsed, bringing the glacier down on top of it.
- 🪨 Geomorphologist Dan Shugar: a big bedrock failure that took part of the glacier with it. Colleague Kristen Cook: the ground underneath collapsed and took the glacier with it. Jakob Steiner: the lower glacier tongue sheared off because the rock below failed.
- 📉 Cook told the Times the rock the glacier was sitting on collapsed. The Times headline still read Landslide Along With Glacial Collapse Likely Set Off Nepal Flooding, Scientists Say. Misleading, Shellenberger writes: it was the landslide that brought the glacier down.
- 🪧 Free-page caption: Antonio Guterres in Nepal in 2023, Al Gore with then-IPCC chair Rajendra Pachauri, and a Glacier National Park sign that falsely claimed the glaciers would disappear by 2020\. The dek: they are now blaming melting permafrost, but there is no evidence for that either.

## 6\. Hollywood's paranoid hatred of Israel

- 🎬 To see how unhinged the left's loathing of Israel has become, O'Neill writes, look at the green-ink missive signed by 180 showbiz folk this week. Ostensibly a defence of Mark Ruffalo against antisemitism accusations. It reads, he says, like something vomited up by the murkiest Subreddit.
- 💥 It started when Ruffalo attacked the US$111 billion merger of Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros Discovery, then dragged Israel in. A state the size of Wales, more than 5,000 miles from America, with sweet FA to do with the deal.
- 🕸 Ruffalo's chain: David Ellison runs Paramount Skydance. Father Larry Ellison is Oracle's chief technology officer. Oracle has provided software to the IDF. Therefore the same oligarchs 'powering' a 'genocide' will soon master one of the world's largest media conglomerates, and one day it will be used on you.
- 🏢 Paramount said it was troubled by what looked like antisemitic tropes. Applying words like genocide and apartheid to a corporate transaction was a bridge too far.
- 📨 The letter, signed by 180 creatives of Jewish heritage: the road to WarnerMount runs through Gaza. That blood money will now fashion an Orwellian world in which a handful of oligarchs consolidate control over what we watch, and watch us.
- 🧪 Gaza as an open-air laboratory for AI-driven killing. Hard to decide, O'Neill writes, what is worse: the insanity, or the vanity of watching a war and thinking it might limit what you can stream in the Hollywood Hills.
- 🌍 The core commandment: none will be free until Gaza is free. Sally Rooney: the liberation of Palestine really does represent the liberation of the world. Ellen Barkin, defending Ruffalo: Anti-Semitism is a hatred of Jews. Anti-Zionism is a hatred of Israel.
- 🎯 Takeaway: all the things hysterics once said about Jews, he writes, people now say about the Jewish State. Insisting on a dark link between some Jewish entity and the suffering of humankind is the OG antisemitism.

## 7\. Hoax of an inquiry

- 🇦🇺 The Royal Commission into Antisemitism and Social Cohesion, set up after the Bondi massacre, is a cruel hoax on Australia's Jewish communities by a cynical, cowardly and thoroughly shameless Labor government, the magazine writes.
- 📅 On 17 January, seven months ahead of most commentary, it called Anthony Albanese's announcement a Claytons royal commission: the commission you have when you are not having a commission.
- 👤 First flaw: a commissioner who does not enjoy the Jewish community's unqualified support, an appointment read as reassuring the government rather than those most directly affected.
- 🧩 Second: antisemitism framed not as an ideological, religious or security problem to be fearlessly confronted, but as social friction to be managed for national consensus, with warnings against outcomes that might undermine social cohesion.
- 🔦 Result: no radical Islamists under a forensic spotlight. Unique in Australian history, it says, in not seeing a single soul wriggling under cross-examination. It will not recognise what was obvious on the morning of 15 December: decades of reckless immigration imported Islamism.
- 🚧 Chris Kenny in the Australian: Jewish schools behind wire and guards shame the nation. Imagine the outrage if Catholic children faced a terrorist threat that warranted security at parish schools. The daily fear, the leader says, is the price progressives are happy for others to pay.
- 📄 Predicted findings: a recital of antisemitism's evils, released a week before Christmas, four days after the anniversary of the worst terrorist attack in Australian history, the sting lost in the festive season. Government policy, and radical Islam via immigration, whitewashed into a sea of anti-hate-speech recommendations.
- 🎯 Takeaway: a commission invited to examine antisemitism only so far as it does not disturb the social arrangements that have allowed it to grow.

## 8\. Trump won't lose

*James Allan - The Spectator Australia*

- 📺 With two months to the US midterms, the ABC and the rest of the left-leaning legacy media say Republicans are in huge trouble and Democrats are well placed to take one or both chambers. Allan: be as sceptical as of their Covid coverage.
- 📉 True: in 39 of the last 41 midterms the President's party lost seats. Generic polls show about a seven-point Democrat advantage. Those pollsters over-favoured Democrats in 2024, and more recently botched the Michigan, Wisconsin and Florida Democrat primaries.
- 💰 This time Republicans are cashed up and likely to outspend the Democrats. Elon Musk has pledged to match Democrat-supporting oligarchs dollar for dollar. Republican spending typically starts after Labor Day, right about now.
- 🗳 Senate map: Democrats need seven of nine among Georgia, Ohio, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Alaska, Iowa, Michigan, Maine and Texas. Self-describing socialists in Maine and Michigan. The Texas nominee, Allan says, will massively struggle to get men to vote for him. Alaska, Iowa and Ohio are just plain tough.
- 🗺 The Supreme Court has struck down racial gerrymandering, and Republicans have at last decided to copy the Democrats and gerrymander. In New England, about 40 percent of votes are Republican, yet zero House Republicans, save Senator Susan Collins in Maine.
- 📬 Fight over unsolicited mail-in ballots, third-party harvesting and drop boxes. Trump is trying checks by executive order, including postal bar codes and seeking voter rolls. Some lower-court judges are blocking him. The Supreme Court has given a procedural win. If he prevails, the House is in play.
- 🍷 He has bets in superior bottles of wine on Republicans retaining the Senate, and one bet on the House. On Iran: twenty-odd US soldiers dead, no boots on the ground, and Iran, as he tells it, no longer a near-term nuclear threat. Gas cheaper than experts predicted. Hormuz more or less open.
- 🎯 Takeaway: the conventional midterm wipeout is not a lock. He has money on the Senate. The Lake Ontario as Lake America trolling is the encore, aimed at people who spent a decade renaming everything they disliked.

## 9\. The Political Grift That's Making Everyone Stupider

- 🎰 Many people in public life, Shapiro writes, grift for clicks and cash. You can tell who they are because they kaleidoscopically shift their views and their personas.
- 📈 They get pretty good numbers, proclaim themselves the cutting edge of populist politics, and actual political figures follow. His solution: do not donate your attention. There are only so many breaths in this life, and you will not get them back.
- 🎭 Exhibit: Milo Yiannopoulos, popular in 2015-16 as a flamboyantly gay edgelord, a Steve Bannon brainchild, then imploded after taped comments Shapiro characterises as backing priests and underage boys as a maturation process.
- ♻ He never really went away. Interned for Marjorie Taylor Greene. Guest on Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens. Campaigned with Kanye West. Then a supposedly ex-gay militant Christian. Overstayed his visa and was deported.
- 📺 Now he is on Piers Morgan, whom Shapiro calls the Bonnie Blue of politics, a clickwhore, lamenting his mistreatment after what Shapiro calls a clown-car crash of an appearance.
- 💀 February 2025 tweet: I fucking love tyranny. After Dennis Prager's spinal injury he tweeted God's wrath, Final Destination, an act of God. On Morgan he wept, claimed 15 agents and two who walked off the job. Shapiro does not believe the last bit. Title of Yiannopoulos's piece: I am a Persecuted Human Rights Icon.
- 📚 Todd Rose, Collective Illusions: if people merely copy each other's choices, wisdom becomes stupidity in a hurry. A copying cascade. Morgan's defence of every charge of immorality is that he gets lots of clicks.
- 🎯 Takeaway: the attention economy should not dictate politics. When the public substitutes clicks for judgment, it follows some of the most idiotic and immoral people in America. The Founders feared the mob. They were not fans of pure democracy.

## 10\. One Nation's House of Cards

- 🎤 Pauline Hanson unveils Mike Newman as the candidate for Cessnock and One Nation's new NSW leader. He answers a Japanese journalist in fluent Japanese. Hanson interrupts. Barnaby Joyce steps in. The performance looked manufactured, Clegg writes, because it was.
- 📥 Installed as NSW leader before he has won a seat, or even addressed a preselection. Unlike Campbell from Queensland, he has not even been a mayor. Presented as a possible premier. Maurice Newman's son, articulate, impressive CV. Local knowledge, she says, used to count.
- ⛏ Cessnock is old Labor: working-class, mining, unionised, held by about 20 percent. A former senior public servant after 25 years in Japan, living in an unspecified suburb, has been parachuted in. Over in Secret Harbour, Hanson hammered a Labor candidate for living just outside the electorate. Her putative premier will not say where he lives.
- 🎯 He was not sent because he belongs there. Cessnock was chosen because Hanson needs it. One Nation pretends it merely wants to work with the Coalition. At the 2025 federal election it polled 6.1 percent in Labor seats, 8.4 in Liberal seats and 14.9 in National seats.
- 📊 Since then it has recruited Barnaby Joyce, hunted candidates across Coalition electorates, and endlessly trolled senior Coalition figures. There is no path to Hanson as prime minister unless she demolishes the Coalition. She does not want you to know that.
- 🎭 Cessnock is the alibi: theatre of coming for Labor's forgotten working class, while the party mainly stalks Coalition seats. Conservative voters, Clegg says, are entitled to understand the magnitude of the project.
- 📜 The constitution names Hanson president for as long as she wishes. When she resigns, she appoints her successor. The national executive can disband branches. State leaders are announced, not elected.
- 🛫 In Clegg's region, Queensland flying squads arrived with kooky speeches and zero knowledge of the electorate. A local executive formed, then resigned within weeks when headquarters demanded total control. For a so-called grassroots party, the complaint was, it has no interest in the grassroots.
- 🎯 Takeaway: a party that promises to return power to the people, designed so its own people have none. Long term, she writes, that is a house of cards.
