## 1\. The 'Kirkaversary' speaks to the sickness of progressives

*Hugo Timms - spiked*

- 🕯️ One year after Charlie Kirk was shot dead at Utah Valley University, left-wing activists are still celebrating. A new statue outside Turning Point USA was quickly defaced with red paint.
- 🩸 The vandal aimed the paint at the left side of the statue's neck, where Kirk was shot, and painted a red cross across the face. Timms reads it as a warning that the 'wrong' views can be fatal.
- 🎓 Students at South Carolina and Georgetown ran Charlie Kirk lookalike contests for the anniversary. At Berkeley, a 'Kirkaversary' event mocked the 31-year-old father of two with chants of 'We carry the flame'.
- 😈 One young man shrugged that Kirk was 'low-key evil'. Timms says any evil sits with those who still gloat over an assassination.
- 🔫 He links the mood to wider left-wing violence: the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, a Palestine Action sledgehammer attack on a Bristol police officer, and 'Bash Back' calls to assault gender-critical figures.
- 🗣️ Kirk was debating students in the open air when he was killed, a format he took to hundreds of campuses because he believed in free speech and humanising opponents.
- 💡 Takeaway: The anniversary spectacle shows how far progressive 'kindness' has slid when political murder becomes a campus party theme.

## 2\. A naked inconsistency

*Simon O'Connor - On Point*

- 🎙️ O'Connor opens with Andrew Doyle and a simple test: take a dear belief and ask how it looks with the shoe on the other foot. Hate-speech laws and strongman power both fail that test.
- 👙 Sydney Sweeney's new Novig sports-betting ads are highly sexualised: naked poses, sports kit as props, deliberately built to go viral.
- 🎰 Novig is a US peer-to-peer sports trading platform, more Napster than TAB. O'Connor, no gambler, says no amount of Sweeney would convert him.
- 😮 He expected conservative pushback. The surprise was how many progressives raged at an actress using her own body in an ad.
- 🔁 The contradictions stack: outrage at Sweeney's nakedness alongside ease with porn, Pride parades and OnlyFans. Beauty is celebrated until it looks like Sweeney.
- 🗳️ He argues the real offence is group identity. She is a beautiful white woman who has not endorsed Democrats or left causes, so she is outside the approved tribe.
- ⚖️ Left-aligned stars can go nude in magazines; wrong pronouns on the right can cost a job. Identity, he says, now demands the right politics too.
- 💸 He still criticises Sweeney for taking big money to commodify herself and lure mostly men into gambling. Beauty sold into ugliness is its own inconsistency.
- 💡 Takeaway: Put the shoe on the other foot. If your rules only bind people outside your tribe, they are not principles.

## 3\. Who makes the law? The Crown answers

*Roger Partridge - Plain Thinking*

- ⚖️ Attorney-General Chris Bishop and Solicitor-General Anna Adams KC both said the quiet part out loud: making the law is Parliament's job, not the courts'.
- 📜 Twenty years ago neither speech would have been needed. Jack Hodder KC has watched Supreme Court 'mission creep' with 'a troubling sense of unease.'
- 🏛️ Bishop: statute law is for Parliament. Courts have become a forum for causes that failed to persuade the public and therefore Parliament.
- 🧭 Adams: Parliament is sovereign because it is representative. Crown lawyers will read Acts as written and will not ask courts to invent new values or new sources of law.
- ⚠️ Partridge lists three forms of straying: twisting clear words, rewriting common law for shifting 'values', and making ministers weigh matters Parliament never required.
- 🌡️ Exhibit A is Mike Smith's climate case. The Court of Appeal threw it out as a matter for Parliament. The Supreme Court put it back, pointing toward a symbolic mega-trial.
- 🛠️ Parliament has already legislated to correct aberrant decisions, including customary coastal title and the Smith claim. Case-by-case fixes are blunt and political.
- 📘 His NZ Initiative report urged lasting tools: define 'rule of law' in the Senior Courts Act, lock statute meaning at enactment, and stop Bill of Rights rewrites beyond what the words allow.
- 💡 Takeaway: The Crown has drawn a line. Parliament should now write that line into law so nobody elected still has to guess who rules.

## 4\. The Greens' 'affordable kai' policy: how does it add up?

*Grant Duncan - Politics Happens*

- 🛒 The Greens want Woolworths and Foodstuffs to 'divest' at least 120 stores plus distribution capacity into public ownership, then launch KiwiMart with one mandate: keep prices down.
- ❓ 'Require' is doing heavy lifting. What if owners will not sell at the price a Green government offers?
- 📊 The Commerce Commission found relatively high grocery prices and aggregated profits. No new retail chain has forced its way in; land and wholesale access remain barriers.
- 💰 Parliamentary Library modelling cited by the Greens: about $1.3 billion to acquire 120 stores and two distribution centres, plus $1.5 billion to capitalise KiwiMart. Total about $2.8 billion.
- 🚫 Policy also bans 'excessive pricing' in supermarkets and other 'uncompetitive' sectors such as energy and fuel, with Commerce Commission enforcement and compensation for overcharging.
- 🧮 Duncan notes there is still no method for setting an 'affordable' price or a non-'exorbitant' profit rate. Labour's anti-gouging talk overlaps, without the shop-buying.
- 👷 Would staff be kept on the same terms? Do low shelf prices mean low wages? The coercion would hit owners' contracts and plans either way.
- 🏙️ Inner-city Green voters may not need cheap KiwiMart kai, yet would help fund the bill. Low-income seats might like the vibe more than the arithmetic.
- 🧾 Even the free cut flags that $1.3 billion will not buy 120 full-sized stores and two DCs outright, and ROI for KiwiMart and the separate marae fund is assumed, not estimated.
- 💡 Takeaway: Real food-price pain, coercive cure, fuzzy numbers. Affordable kai is a slogan until someone can show how the till and the taxpayer both add up.

## 5\. Ed Sheeran, Macklemore and the tyranny of the Israel-haters

*Brendan O'Neill - spiked*

- 🎤 Macklemore opened for Ed Sheeran at MetLife Stadium, barked 'Free Palestine', talked up Israel's 'genocide', and turned a pop night into a Gaza rally for 90,000 fans.
- 🏟️ Stadiums on the rest of the US tour balked at hosting mass anti-Israel rallies. Sheeran faced an ultimatum: ditch Macklemore or lose dates. Macklemore was dropped.
- 🚪 Other support acts walked in solidarity, including Finneas and Aaron Rowe. Sheeran's backing band walked too. The tour risks collapsing into ideology's joy-suck.
- 😬 O'Neill still flinches at ditching an advertised act for speech, even dumb, defamatory speech. Promoters should have known Macklemore leaps on every woke bandwagon.
- 👑 Removal handed the Gaza crowd a martyr narrative. Israelophobia, he says, is already high-status on campuses and at literary soirees, not a silenced heresy.
- 📢 He calls the MetLife speech vain and authoritarian: a middle-of-the-road gig turned into a neo-Nuremberg against the Jewish state for people who paid to hear 'Thinking Out Loud'.
- 🛐 Palestinianism acts like a neo-religion conquering streets, shops and now stadiums. Fans, Jewish and Gentile, were entitled to resent a $200 night hijacked by keffiyeh moralism.
- ⚔️ The cult splits the 'enlightened' from the 'complicit'. Painting Jews as moral wrong-uns is treated as collateral. BDS now targets Sheeran's 'complicit tour'.
- 💡 Takeaway: The free-speech plea for Macklemore flipped into compelled speech against Sheeran. Refuse the commandments and they will try to destroy you and call it justice.

## 6\. 'Fauda' Is a Masterpiece

*Roger Simon - American Refugees*

- 📺 Simon calls Season 5 of Israel's long-running series Fauda a masterpiece. It landed on Netflix on 8 September and deals with October 7 with crushing force.
- 😭 He wept alone at the end, watching principals at the grave of a colleague killed while hunting the terror leader who murdered and raped his wife.
- 👹 Hamas is shown as unvarnished evil that started a war with brutality it now hides. Unlike Spielberg's Munich, Fauda refuses moral equivalence.
- 🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Across five seasons it still humanises many Arab characters, even dark ones. That may help explain its odd success in Arab markets.
- 📈 FlixPatrol (10 Sep): Season 5 hit No.1 in Lebanon and top three across Jordan, UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman and Kuwait.
- 🪞 What broke him was Israeli characters admitting collective culpability for not seeing October 7 coming: overconfidence as moral failure, not softness toward Hamas.
- 🎬 There is no neat thriller ending. Lior Raz (Doron), co-creator with Avi Issacharoff and a former undercover mista'arvim, carries authentic dramatic and action weight.
- 🎬 He contrasts Fauda with Venice's 25-minute ovation for 'NAZA', an anonymous-soldier documentary he distrusts for distorted faces, voices and missing context.
- 💡 Takeaway: Binge Season 5 with tissues. It is art about October 7, not propaganda, and it refuses both denial and cheap equivalence.

## 7\. The untouchable Anthony Fauci

*Cory Franklin - spiked*

- 🤐 After pleading the Fifth over 100 times before Congress in July, Fauci still talks when the forum is friendly. Georgetown's Lawrence Gostin lobbed softballs for nearly two hours.
- 🎭 Fauci joked he was 'the bad guy' who 'created the virus' and 'shut the schools'. Franklin says the joke undersells how much he set the national tone.
- 📰 David Zweig: Fauci's name appeared in 2,378 New York Times articles from 2020 to early 2023, far outpacing CDC directors combined.
- 🏠 On lockdowns he claimed 'We didn't lock anything down' and 'I wasn't locked in my house.' Franklin recalls he pushed China-style suppression after a WHO trip report.
- 🏫 On 12 March 2020 he called for a nationwide school shutdown. De Blasio cited a Friday call with Fauci before closing New York schools; many US schools stayed shut for months.
- 📉 Thresholds for reopening were vague enough for politicians and unions to default to closure. European and US data showed kids rarely drove spread or severe disease. He did not cite them.
- 🧪 'I'm a scientist, and I go by data' collides with that record. He also told Gostin he is 'not sure we would change much' about the public-health response.
- 🏆 Gostin closed by calling him 'a national treasure'. Franklin hears sycophancy, not scrutiny, and a man still rewriting catastrophe as competence.
- 💡 Takeaway: Untouchable means never facing a hard question. Soft interviews will not settle the Covid ledger.

## 8\. Is it too late to save the United Kingdom?

*Stephen Daisley - The Spectator Australia*

- 🏴 Andy Burnham said Scotland and Northern Ireland are in 'exactly the same' constitutional spot and that majority support could unlock a border poll. Daisley hears the Union accelerating toward break-up.
- 🏛️ First ministers of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland met in Cardiff Bay, said 'Westminster's time is coming to an end', and pledged to break up the UK.
- 🐴 His line: 'Devolution is the Trojan horse the Trojans built themselves.' Major and Blair traded conditional sovereignty and provincial self-government for peace and tidy politics.
- Irlande Sinn Fein now dominates Northern Ireland and pursues a united Ireland. Plaid Cymru is in power in Wales with independence in its DNA despite campaign soft-pedalling.
- 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Scotland was the canary. Within eight years of Holyrood, the SNP took control and has held it toward a 20-year mark. Institutions became a battering ram against the UK.
- 🧾 Nationalists renamed the executive a 'government', won a referendum from Cameron, then more tax and welfare powers after defeat. Failure on schools, NHS, ferries and roads did not shrink the independence bloc.
- 🌍 Scottish ministers lobby abroad, open quasi-embassies and push foreign policy on the Middle East while London treats devolution as a way to make Celtic problems vanish.
- 😴 Labour and Tory PMs had years to reform or scrap the settlement. Spads nodded, news cycles moved on. Elites, he says, no longer believe in Britain enough to defend it.
- 💡 Takeaway: They will weep when the flag is folded. Unless Westminster spends real capital on devolution reform now, weeping is all that will be left.

## 9\. The cynical genius of Sydney Sweeney's latest advert

*Paul Burke - The Spectator Australia*

- 📸 After the American Eagle jeans storm, Sweeney is back for Novig, a sports 'prediction' betting app. This time she is all but naked behind sports kit, repeating 'sports'.
- 📈 Nearly two million views when Burke wrote. A tiny minority rage; most just watch. Men go wild one way, some women another.
- 🏃 British sprinter Amy Hunt, after a 22.1s 200m, used her post-race interview: 'This is what women's sport looks like. Hard work, sweat, blood, tears.'
- 🤸 Gymnast Gracie Kramer posted training montage: she does not know what Sweeney was doing, 'but this is what a woman in sports looks like.'
- 🎯 Burke's reply: we know. Sweeney was selling a betting app. She never claimed to be an elite athlete or mocked their sacrifice.
- 🛋️ If fair representation matters, online punters might complain there is no shot of a middle-aged bloke on a recliner with lager and a slip ticket.
- 🧠 Adland 101: you need not show the target market to reach them. Casting Sweeney after last year's denim outrage was savvy for the download crowd.
- 💰 Detractors amplify the ad. Ariarne Titmus said 'do better'. Given Sweeney's goal, and her equity in Novig, Burke asks how she could have done better.
- 💡 Takeaway: Outrage is the campaign. Cynical advertising plus a certain brand of female empowerment wins again while the scolds do the distribution.

## 10\. In defence of Sydney Sweeney's breasts - again

*Jenny Holland - spiked*

- 📰 Holland is writing about Sweeney's body again because the Novig ad put it back on every feed: sports kit as fig leaves, the word 'sports' on loop.
- 🦈 She calls it another marketing triumph, chum in a shark tank for men who will subscribe. Questionable taste, especially the basketball-hoop squat frame.
- 🙄 Haters still sound churlish. Female athletes posting 'this is what women in sports look like' miss the point: Sweeney is an actress selling a betting firm, not a rival athlete.
- 🆓 Free advice: if you dislike the ad, do not buy the product.
- 🥊 She notes the silence from many of the same voices when men competed in women's categories, shared changing rooms, or beat female boxers on the Olympic stage.
- 🎭 The ad's line that they wanted to show 'just sports' while she sits naked on a hoop is comic. Nobody is looking at the fixture list.
- 🃏 Piling on is low-stakes because Sweeney is already right-coded for refusing political sermons. Banning men from female sport is the harder fight they skip.
- 🏁 Final score in her telling: Sweeney 2, scolds 0.
- 💡 Takeaway: Spare the sanctimony. The moral energy spent on a betting ad would be better spent defending women's sport from actual erasure.
