## 1\. Too clever by half

*Liam Hehir - The Blue Review*

- 🧠 Hehir opens with 'too clever by half': a scheme so sure of itself, and so complicated, that it blows up in the face of the schemer.
- 🗳️ He applies that to Don Brash, Nick Mowbray and other rightists telling National voters to keep the National electorate candidate and give the party vote to Act or New Zealand First.
- ➕ The pitch is that enough split votes would give the centre-right an overhang under MMP and a better shot at staying in government.
- ⚠️ Hehir says the case is superficially appealing for people who want to stop the left but care little about National's interests, yet is so practically unsound that it is just as likely to torpedo the right as to save it.
- 🧩 Success, he writes, depends on tens of thousands hearing the same instruction, understanding it correctly and executing it with almost no mistakes.
- 📊 His key point: after 30 years, New Zealanders still do not really understand MMP mechanics. A New Zealand Initiative survey in 2020 found only 46 per cent knew both ways a party gets into Parliament.
- ❓ He suggests asking ordinary voters whether the party vote or the candidate vote matters more for who governs.
- 💡 Takeaway (free preview): Hehir's subtitle is that the vote-splitting campaign makes a Labour government more, not less, likely. The paid remainder develops that case.

## 2\. Undue Influence.

*Chris Trotter - Chris Trotter*

- 📢 Trotter opens: influence is a problem, at least that is what New Zealanders are constantly being told.
- 📕 The past week, he says, has been dominated by Nicky Hager's claim that the influence to fear is the 'Far Right', whose avatar in Hager's book Dirty Work is the Taxpayers' Union.
- ⬅️ Historically, he notes, that framing is unusual: for most of the eight decades since the Second World War, the 'Far Left' was generally identified as the prime generator of unwanted political influence.
- 🐱 The free subtitle states: 'The Kiwi Left has discovered there are more ways to skin the capitalist cat than with a revolutionary's sharpened bayonet.'
- 🔒 The free preview ends after those two paragraphs. The rest sits behind a paid subscription / 7-day free trial.
- 📅 Published 30 September 2026 on Trotter's Substack.
- 🖼️ The post image is a small Substack upload (about 545x354).
- 💡 Takeaway (free preview only): Trotter sets Hager's Far Right / Taxpayers' Union thesis against a longer history in which the Far Left was cast as the main source of undue influence. The paid body is not visible here.

## 3\. Kerry Butler: Should Our Country be Named Aotearoa?

*Kerry Butler - Brash & Mitchell*

- 📢 Butler says a push to rename the country 'Aotearoa' is advancing by creeping normalcy, orchestrated especially via news presenters.
- 💰 He warns of the financial cost to New Zealand's internationally recognised 'NZ' marketing brand if the crusade goes too far.
- 🪖 He also cites about 30,000 New Zealand soldiers interred overseas whose gravestones name their homeland as 'New Zealand'.
- 🚫 Claims that 'New Zealand' would always stay combined with Aotearoa are, he writes, rubbish, given examples where only Aotearoa is used.
- 🗺️ He argues Maori had no traditional name for the country as a whole: the North Island was Te Ika a Maui and the South Island Te Waka a Maui.
- ☁️ Aotearoa is said to have described white cloud; 'Aotea' was used by some for the North Island, and the King Country was called Aotearoa in the 1870s.
- 📚 William Reeves popularised 'Aotearoa' for the whole country in 1890 through romantic literary narratives. The first Maori dictionary (1844) had no entry for it, and the te reo Treaty of Waitangi (1840) does not mention it.
- 📜 In 1835, chiefs drafting the Declaration of Independence used Nu Tireni for New Zealand, which also appears in the te reo Treaty, which Butler reads as showing comfort with the English name.
- 💡 Takeaway: Butler says Aotearoa was never the traditionally accepted national name, and that Maori even coined te reo forms to match 'New Zealand'.

## 4\. Apparently Fingernails Are Colonialist

*Simon O'Connor - On Point*

- 💅 O'Connor flags a BBC beauty piece arguing that not painting one's nails promotes 'blankness' and 'erasure of culture' for black and brown communities, with 'elegant' or 'tasteful' treated as white-supremacist euphemisms.
- 🇳🇿 He links it to Kate Hannah of New Zealand's Disinformation Project casting braiding children's hair or baking bread as signs of white supremacy.
- 🍺 He also nods to a UK Labour MP treating a warm pint in a pub with a dog as a far-right concept.
- 🔄 By the same crude intersectionality, he says, painting nails could just as easily be attacked as cultural appropriation.
- 🏠 He traces the pattern to oikophobia: disdain for one's own Western or European culture, plus a Marxist-style dialectic that turns every choice into opposing camps.
- ⚖️ Standards run one way, he argues: Christian teaching is obsessively critiqued while other religions are spared; Western failings are amplified and others ignored, including selective 'genocide' attention away from Sudan, Myanmar, Nigeria or Tigray.
- 🏨 He ties the same decolonisation drive to reports that local iwi around National Park want the old Chateau demolished for a cultural centre, despite officials saying restoring it would help the local economy and no shortage of nearby land.
- 💡 Takeaway: O'Connor calls oikophobia and decolonisation an iconoclasm that destroys the colour, meaning and joy of wider culture, and a reverse colonialism that has not learned from the past.

## 5\. 'I Ran Toward the Cockpit': An Exclusive Interview with the Israeli Dad Who Stopped a Hijacking

*Neria Kraus - The Free Press*

- ✈️ Around 8:20am local time on Wednesday, a Dubai to Tel Aviv flight sent an emergency signal after one co-pilot repeatedly stabbed the other and seized the cockpit.
- 📉 Within two minutes the plane plunged more than 17,000 feet and veered toward Saudi Arabia, with about 180 people on board.
- 🚪 Injured pilot Smit Machchhar fought back and opened the door; passengers and crew then stormed the cockpit, overpowered the attacker and landed in Saudi Arabia.
- ✅ Everyone on board arrived safely back in Tel Aviv at 6:34pm local time.
- 🎤 Kraus spoke with passenger Yaniv Hayoun immediately after landing. Hayoun was among those who stormed the cockpit.
- 📸 A Reuters photo on the page shows Hayoun reacting after arriving at Ben Gurion International Airport on 30 September 2026.
- 🔒 The exclusive interview body sits behind The Free Press paywall.
- 💡 Takeaway (free preview only): Passengers and crew stopped a mid-air stabbing hijacking attempt; Hayoun's first-person account is in the paid piece.

## 6\. Media Support For Mass Prosecutions Of MAGA Behind Whitewashing Of Trump Investigator Jack Smith, Who Read Reporters' Text Messages

*Michael Shellenberger - Public*

- 🏛️ Shellenberger notes media coverage of Jack Smith's Senate Judiciary hearing on 29 September 2026 casting Republican questions as a bust: Politico headlined a 'gaffe instead' of a smoking gun, and ABC said Republicans lacked evidence.
- 📱 He contrasts that with Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley's records showing Smith collected text messages between nearly 50 journalists and White House officials.
- 💵 Those records also cover 4,782 checks written by small donors, he writes.
- 🏛️ And text messages from 44 members of Congress.
- 🔄 He asks readers to imagine the media reaction if Trump's Justice Department, not Biden's, had gathered the same material.
- 📰 The free dek says the Biden Administration's special counsel collected cashed checks and other communications in an apparent attempt to prosecute small Republican donors and members of Congress.
- 🔒 The rest of the piece, including his three examples of media double standards, is for paid subscribers.
- 💡 Takeaway (free preview): Shellenberger's opening charge is that outlets whitewashed Smith while downplaying collection of journalists', donors' and lawmakers' communications.

## 7\. Douglas Murray: Israel Is Conquering Its Enemies

*Douglas Murray - The Free Press*

- ✈️ Murray opens from Wednesday's foiled Flydubai hijacking attempt, linking passenger bravery to United Flight 93 and to 1970s Israeli-target hijackings.
- 🔗 He points readers to The Free Press exclusive with Yaniv Hayoun (item 5 in this Ten@10).
- ⚔️ His larger claim: Israel and the West remain at war with Islamic radicals, and it is a war they are winning.
- 📢 He notes daily declarations of Israeli defeat online, which he calls shrill and at odds with the ground war.
- 🗓️ Approaching the third anniversary of the 7 October attacks, he stands by what he wrote a year earlier: Israel and her allies have been winning on the ground even while losing the PR war.
- 📣 The PR war matters, he says, but less than the war itself. Better to win the ground war and lose the PR war than the reverse.
- 📝 Editor Mene Ukueberuwa's free intro frames the past three years as a triumph for Israelis despite constant trials.
- 🔒 The full essay sits behind The Free Press paywall.
- 💡 Takeaway (free preview): Murray says battlefield success against radical enemies outweighs critics' disapproval and a lost PR war.

## 8\. AI Use Neuters Leftist Newspapers

*Joe Schaeffer - Liberty Nation News*

- 📰 Schaeffer says decades of intensely biased leftist newspapering alienated the public, then relied on billionaires and conglomerates who will not forever fund losses for a progressive 'social conscience'.
- 🤖 In early September, Straight Arrow News reported dozens of reporters across at least 17 McClatchy papers (including the Miami Herald, Kansas City Star and Sacramento Bee) were laid off as the company pivots to AI chatbot lifestyle content.
- 🏆 He scoffs at Pulitzer-heavy mourning, saying millions who tuned out long ago stopped treating a Pulitzer as prestige.
- 📊 SAN's claim that about 40% of local US papers closed in the past decade is corrected against Medill's finding that the nearly 40% decline ran over two decades from 2005.
- 🧪 A Medill Chicago News Survey (15 September 2026) found only 15% comfortable with AI deciding story priorities, 18% with AI writing a full story from notes, and 20% with AI personalising articles.
- 🏛️ He contrasts corporate AI 'agentify the entire enterprise' talk with the subsidise-local-news camp (Medill, philanthropy, public programmes) that Liberty Nation has criticised before.
- 📡 Citing the Media Research Center and a Washington Post AI test, he says chatbots disproportionately lean on left-wing sources, even models marketed as conservative.
- 💡 Takeaway: Schaeffer does not mourn the old newsroom dinosaurs, but warns AI could centralise progressive bias as faceless 'fact' worse than named partisan reporters.

## 9\. Australia and vaping

*Eric Crampton - Offsetting Behaviour*

- 🇦🇺 Crampton quotes ASH NZ's Prof Beaglehole after an Australia tour: legal cigarettes widely available but expensive (A$40 to A$60 a pack of 20), while illicit packs start around A$9.
- 💬 One shopkeeper even advised: if you want to get rich, open a tobacco shop and sell cheap cigarettes.
- 🚫 The contrast on vapes: illegal ones were easy to find; regulated legal ones, pharmacy-only, were not, and most pharmacies do not stock them.
- 🚬 Beaglehole stresses smoking and vaping are not the same: burning tobacco causes almost all smoking disease and death; vaping is not harmless but substantially less harmful.
- ❓ Some NZ experts want pharmacy-only vapes like Australia to cut youth use. Beaglehole asks what people who smoke will do instead, and says policies must be judged by consequences as well as intentions.
- 🧒 Crampton's own fix for youth vaping: social supply by older friends is unregulated, while underage sale already carries penalties.
- 📜 He points to Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act s241 (offence to supply alcohol to a minor without parent or guardian permission) as the right template, keeping parental supply if a child has started smoking.
- ✏️ His quip: crayon out 'alcohol', write 'vape', stick it into the Smokefree Environments Act.
- 💡 Takeaway: Crampton does not know why youth-vaping hawks are not arguing for that simple social-supply offence.

## 10\. The Palestinian Inquisition

*Yoni Weinberg - spiked*

- 🎬 Weinberg opens with actor Adam Brody telling GQ to 'put me down as thinking it's a genocide' and wanting a free Palestine, language he likens to choosing sea bass at a wedding, with no evidence offered.
- 🔥 As a Hollywood screenwriter developing a Spanish Inquisition series, he sees modern celebrity rituals: accusation, past combed, public declaration, absolution or the stake.
- 👕 Actress Odessa A'zion faced investigation over an old IDF t-shirt photo; answering 'not a zio' still failed to satisfy some.
- 📺 After an Emmy, Hannah Einbinder said Jews must distinguish Jewish identity from Israel, and scolded peers who 'cannot utter a single word', treating 'I don't know enough' as another crime.
- 🎙️ Hasan Piker, having likened liberal Zionists to 'liberal Nazis', is cast as grand inquisitor setting acceptable answers.
- 🎤 Ed Sheeran was tried by association after Macklemore left his tour, then damned both for meeting a former Israeli hostage and for condemning 7 October while calling Gaza catastrophic; MP Zarah Sultana accused him of 'both-sidesing genocide'.
- 🎾 Pink faced backlash for criticising Macklemore; Elizabeth Banks and Amy Adams were then attacked merely for sitting with her at the US Open.
- 📝 Weinberg says you can donate to Palestinians privately and still fail without the required words, while correct declarations win praise without further deeds.
- 💡 Takeaway: The celebrity inquisition need not make everyone believe; it only needs everyone to know what happens if they do not say the right words.
