## 1\. Democracy Briefing: Labour is reneging on its pay equity promise

*Bryce Edwards - The Democracy Project*

- 💬 Chris Hipkins called the coalition cancelling pay equity claims under urgency "probably the most reprehensible thing I have seen in my time as a member of Parliament", accusing ministers of "robbing Paula to pay Paul".
- 💵 Labour's fiscal plan funds a $4-an-hour interim rise for about 65,000 care and support workers, costing roughly $2.5 billion. Edwards says that is real money, but the remaining claims get no identified or ring-fenced fund.
- 🔄 After Budget 2025 Hipkins promised to set aside funding. By 29 September he said pay equity "won't be a specific line item", which the Herald's Jamie Ensor called a U-turn. Barbara Edmonds then promised a "sufficient contingency", but by Sunday there was no separate contingency either.
- 📊 Labour instead points to $10.5 billion of unallocated spending over four years, which Hipkins calls "plenty of headroom".
- ⚖️ The PSA and NZNO say completed work showed care and support workers were owed rises of 24 to 38 per cent. 1News described Labour's $4 as about half the roughly $8 an hour unions pushed for, and there is no back pay. NZNO: "a pay rise isn't pay equity".
- 🏥 The 33 claims extinguished by the coalition covered about 180,000 workers across health, education, early childhood, universities, libraries and the public service.
- 🧮 On Thomas Coughlan's arithmetic, if the earlier $11 billion costing is a fair guide, about 80 per cent of Labour's $10.5 billion headroom would go on pay equity, leaving about $2 billion over four years for rising costs everywhere except health, "a near funding freeze".
- 🗳️ Edwards says a Labour government will have to choose between keeping the pay equity promise and freezing funding across much of the state, and voters are entitled to know which before 7 November.
- 💡 Takeaway (free preview, then a paywall; isFreemail=false): the free half is substantial. Paid sections he lists include how pay equity gets watered down, Labour having been here before, and the unions needing to turn up the heat.

## 2\. Overhangs & Split Votes: A Double Cliff-Hanger For New Zealand

*Penny Marie and Paul Mathews - Penny Marie NZ*

- 🗳️ The split-vote strategy, they write, is electorate vote for the National candidate and party vote for NZ First or ACT, which they say gives the right bloc two routes to victory.
- 🟤 Te Pāti Māori led the way, telling supporters for months to split their vote. This week it doubled down, saying it only wants the electorate vote, with a push for the diverted party vote to go to the Greens.
- 📉 With an aggregate party vote of 2 per cent, they say Te Pāti Māori would win two more seats than its party vote entitles it to if it holds its four seats, so a party vote for it is wasted.
- 📊 Their table, from election2026.nz as at 1 October, using Sainte-Laguë and assuming 1 per cent wasted vote, puts the left bloc in position to win.
- 🔢 On 28.7 per cent National would be entitled to 35 seats. It holds 44 electorates now and, they say, looks likely to win about 38, with commentators suggesting 36 to 40\. That would give a three-seat overhang but still leave the left on 63 and the right on 62 in a 125-seat House.
- 🛣️ Route one: win more electorates. Win 39 and it is a hung parliament at 63 each; win 40 and the right has 64\. They name close races such as Wigram.
- 🔀 Route two: divert party votes. If National supporters divert 2 per cent, National keeps its electorates, and if NZ First rises to 11.1 and ACT to 10.5, they say that adds two list seats for the right, enough to govern.
- ⚠️ They say National, unlike Te Pāti Māori, is not encouraging supporters to split, and that no credible pollster or analyst expects the upsurge its two-ticks strategy needs.
- 💡 Takeaway: in their overhang scenario a party vote for National is a wasted vote, and a split vote makes both votes count.

## 3\. New Zealand - Beyond the Boats Invading our Mother Country

*Olivia Pierson - OliviaPierson.org*

- 🐺 Pierson opens by saying the only people left with political zeal are, in her words, wolves looking to loot the country, naming the Greens, Labour, Te Pāti Māori, the Opportunity Party "and the Islamic interest that travels openly in their company".
- 🔁 She calls New Zealand a follower nation that takes its ideas from the UN, Australia and Britain, with politicians who owe themselves to the polls.
- 🇬🇧 "We are not a Pacific invention," she writes. New Zealand is British in law, language and inherited liberties, so the mother country is no foreign parable.
- ⛵ She accuses UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood of speaking about women in the small boats while, she says, the traffic is mostly men aged 18 to 40 from Iran, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Eritrea, about three-quarters of it.
- 🔥 She cites Rotherham, Oxford, Glasgow and Ireland, says France is "literally on fire" from the same importation, and asks why Britain tolerates the nightly boats from France.
- 🏛️ Closer to home, she says Labour's Phil Twyford, who she says would get the immigration portfolio if Labour wins, told a room of migration agents last month that the debate was a "dumpster fire" of right-wing populists demonising migrants.
- ⭐ She dismisses most politicians as offering the same old thing, "apart from Winston Peters and NZ First, the best of the crop".
- 🏺 Any party seeking the votes of a Western free people must, she argues, be nationalist at heart, drawing on Greek reason and Christianity, the inheritance she credits with ending slavery and letting women walk alone at night.
- 💡 Takeaway: Pierson says no one should vote for a politician who cannot speak to what she calls the loss that has happened in Britain.

## 4\. There’s the Bloody Ball. Use it!

*Peter Allan Williams - Peter's Substack*

- 🏉 Williams recalls the 1985 Ranfurly Shield challenge: Canterbury trailed Auckland 24-0 at half time, and coach Alex "Grizz" Wyllie told them "there's the bloody ball. Use it!" They lost 28-23 but were in it to the end.
- 📉 National is behind 24-nil, he says, writing between the RNZ-Reid Research poll (Labour 30.8, National 25.9) and a 1News-Verian poll he expected to show little change from 28.
- 🗺️ The ball is the electorates. National holds 44, and on a 28 per cent party vote it would be entitled to 34 seats.
- ⚠️ Most vulnerable, he says: Banks Peninsula (majority 396), New Lynn (1,013), West Coast Tasman (1,017), Hutt South (1,332), Mt Roskill (1,564) and Wairarapa (2,816).
- 🎯 Chances against the run of play: Wigram after boundary changes, Candace Kinser in Auckland Central, and Melissa Lee just behind in Mt Albert.
- 🪧 In the nine or ten key seats, including East Coast (majority 3,199), he wants Simeon Brown to pull down hoardings with Luxon and Willis and push the candidate vote instead.
- 🤝 He suggests NZ First and ACT candidates chase only the party vote to clear the way for Katie Milne on the West Coast, Mike Butterick in Wairarapa, Melissa Lee in Mt Albert and Tracy Summerfield in Wigram, and use Bishop's profile in Hutt South.
- 🔢 National needs at least 40 electorates, he writes, and must hope ACT and NZ First get 25 between them. The RNZ poll has them on 24, which might be enough in a 127-seat House, before any Te Pāti Māori overhang.
- 💡 Takeaway: Williams says National can kiss the Treasury benches goodbye unless it changes its game plan. It is almost too late, but there is time, just.

## 5\. Interviewing Chloe.

*Chris Trotter - Chris Trotter*

- 🧭 The free subtitle states: "The Greens can opt for materialism or irrationalism, but they can't forever attempt to accommodate both."
- 📺 Trotter starts with the YouTube channel Public Interest, run by young Wellington barrister and journalist Ollie Neas, calling the name a brave choice.
- 🎙️ Neas's latest discussion is with Greens co-leader Chloe Swarbrick, who, Trotter says, as always mounts a strong defence of herself and her party.
- 🥊 In the 54th Parliament, he writes, only Act's David Seymour consistently showed the intellectual chops and ideological dexterity to best her.
- 😤 Christopher Luxon, he says, has relied on cheap red-baiting and bar-room bluster in almost every encounter with her.
- 👔 Chris Hipkins, in Trotter's telling, treats her as a promising mid-level manager who first needs to learn who is, and is not, the boss.
- 🔒 The free preview ends there, about 200 words in. The rest needs a paid subscription or a 7-day free trial.
- 💡 Takeaway (thin free preview): Trotter's argument about the Greens choosing between materialism and irrationalism is in the paid part only.

## 6\. Why the French school riots are a taste of the chaos to come

*Jeremy Stubbs - spiked*

- ⛪ Stubbs contrasts about 800,000 people at Pope Leo XIV's open-air mass in Paris with the week of violence that followed his departure.
- 🏫 School protests that began on 18 September in Créteil spread nationally. By the end of last week more than 1,000 lycées and collèges were affected and more than 5,000 people detained, mostly minors.
- 🚑 Over 300 police were injured last Thursday alone, by which time 65 teachers and principals and 170 pupils had also been hurt. A lycée named after Nelson Mandela in Nantes was ravaged by fire, and a collège in Metz suffered a similar fate.
- 🎆 Rioters used fireworks fired from tubes, aerosol cans thrown into fires, knives, hammers, baseball bats, Molotov cocktails and hydrochloric acid. He also says some officers deployed had little riot experience and mistakes were made.
- 📚 Pupils first protested teacher shortages, decaying buildings, university applications and overwork, with union prompting. Stubbs notes the state is broke, and that poorer areas such as Seine-Saint-Denis already get more education money.
- 🚩 He says the movement was hijacked: the main union behind it, the Union syndicale lycéenne, is far left, and the slogans ran from decolonising education to Gaza and anti-Zionism, which he says descended into antisemitism.
- 🏛️ On Tuesday 40 La France Insoumise representatives joined protests. Seine-Saint-Denis mayor Bally Bagayoko was filmed dancing beside a burning wheelie bin, and the Paris region president says she will bill him €100,000.
- 🗳️ With polls predicting a Marine Le Pen win next year, he cites Mathilde Panot vowing never to accept "fascism taking power, even legally" and Bagayoko predicting a "popular insurrection" if she wins.
- 💡 Takeaway: Stubbs sees LFI's role as a dress rehearsal for a Le Pen victory, and says the worst may be yet to come.

## 7\. RICHARD PREBBLE: A grumpy old man

*Richard Prebble - Brash & Mitchell*

- 🎓 Prebble recalls being 16, when only he and his friend Jim Middleton (later the ABC's chief political correspondent in Canberra) cared about politics. He was running campaigns before he could vote.
- 🗳️ He opposed lowering the voting age to 18 at the time, and says nothing since has changed his mind. For most of our history, 21 was the accepted age.
- 💸 This year, he writes, taxpayers are spending $18.1 million encouraging people to enrol. 166,746 people aged 18 to 24 have yet to do so.
- 👴 By contrast, 103.25 per cent of the estimated eligible 70-plus population is enrolled. "There are more of us than the Commission realised."
- 🏘️ Labour plans to let 16-year-olds vote in local elections, and he says he will lose his non-resident ratepayer vote.
- ⚖️ The Supreme Court ruled that denying 16-year-olds the vote is inconsistent with the Bill of Rights Act ban on age discrimination. On that logic, he asks, why not 14-year-olds?
- 👨 His father thought only those not dependent on the state should vote, and that receiving National Super should disqualify him. Prebble cites IRD research that just 10 per cent of income taxpayers pay more in tax than they receive in transfers.
- 💡 Takeaway: he asks how it is moral for a 16-year-old who has never paid rates to vote for higher rates on him. "Democracy is the tyranny of the majority. But a tyranny of 16-year-olds?"

## 8\. Europe is in trouble

*Alex Berenson - Unreported Truths*

- 🇪🇺 Berenson says Spain's government has just collapsed, the French are rioting, and anti-immigration conservatives keep gaining ground in Germany.
- 🇮🇹 Of continental Europe's four dominant countries, only Italy has a stable government: Giorgia Meloni's conservatives, which he says has lasted longer than any other in Italy's post-war history and just banned burqas for students.
- 🏛️ He cites government spending at 57 per cent of French GDP, 50 per cent in Italy and Germany, and 38 per cent in the United States.
- 🧑‍💻 That bureaucracy makes starting and growing companies hard, he argues, especially in technology, where Europe missed the internet and social media era and barely figures in AI.
- 🏭 He blames a decade of decarbonisation drives for super-high energy costs and middle-class factory jobs lost to China.
- 📰 He quotes a New York Times profile of Meloni on Piombino, once a left and hard-line union stronghold, where her party has taken over as workers turned against globalisation, uncontrolled immigration and liberal elites.
- ➡️ Despite Putin's war in Ukraine and Trump and JD Vance mocking Europe, he says Europe is steadily moving toward nationalist-populist conservatism, though it remains to be seen whether those parties will actually shrink the state.
- 🇺🇸 Americans appear headed the other way for now, he says, over Trump's grifting and the Iran war stalemate's hit on the economy and petrol prices.
- 💡 Takeaway: unless the left can grow economies rather than reshuffle what they make, Berenson says its gains will not last. Marked isFreemail=false, but the full post was readable.

## 9\. Stuff columnist kindles memories of the dunny man’s crucial work when he confesses to not knowing of “nightsoil”

*Bob Edlin - Point of Order*

- 🚽 Edlin recalls the dunny man, officially a nightsoil man, who emptied outdoor bucket toilets before sewerage, working at night to spare residents the sight and smell.
- 📜 Cesspits were banned in the 1870s and nightsoil collections required, after sewage problems in fast-growing towns by the 1860s.
- 🏘️ The service in Bluff, his home town, ended in the mid-1960s, but Kāinga in North Canterbury kept its night cart until 1986.
- ✂️ In August the Government agreed to remove registration rules for 19 archaic "offensive trades", including fish curing, leather tanning, flax pulping and nightsoil collection, saving up to $2.26 million over 10 years.
- 🔇 Edlin says Point of Order found no mainstream media report of the change, despite a Ministry for Regulation release.
- 📰 He credits Stuff columnist Joel Maxwell with noticing it, in a column decrying fuel prices that called the Ministry for Regulation "as bogus and fantastical as Hogwarts academy" and joked, "I don't know what nightsoil is".
- 🇮🇷 Maxwell wrote that the US president "lost the Iran war by the end of its first week". Edlin agrees the US has not won, but quotes Copilot saying no authoritative source says the US has lost.
- 💡 Takeaway: Edlin suggests that claim is something a good editor, or dunny man, should have removed. Short piece, full text.

## 10\. Why Is War Fever Spreading in Europe?

*Martin Gurri - The Free Press*

- 📰 The dek says leaders from London to Berlin are using Russian aggression as an excuse to delegitimise the right-wing parties challenging their grip on power.
- 🚨 Gurri writes that warnings of an approaching war with Russia have swept Europe in recent weeks, from presidents, opposition figures and the news media alike, in a strident, almost panicked tone.
- 🎖️ He starts with Britain. Chief of the defence staff Sir Richard Knighton called this "the most dangerous period that I have known", saying Putin's willingness to target neighbouring states threatens the whole of NATO, including the UK.
- 🚪 Armed Forces Minister Al Carns, "mixing his metaphors" in Gurri's words, said "the shadow of war is knocking on Europe's door."
- 🪦 Former NATO deputy supreme allied commander Sir Richard Shirreff warned that without stronger European deterrence, "your sons and grandchildren and daughters are going to be facing a war with Russia", and foresaw Commonwealth war graves across Eastern Europe.
- 🫡 Jacob Rees-Mogg, whom Gurri calls a Tory gadfly, urged Britons to "do their duty" in a war even if some "have to die", or "the country will be taken over by another country."
- 📺 The BBC joined in, Gurri says, with the headline: "War may be coming. Are we psychologically ready?"
- 🔒 The free preview ends there, after about 230 words of British examples. The rest of Europe, and his argument about right-wing parties, is behind The Free Press paywall.
- 💡 Takeaway (thin free preview): what you can read is a catalogue of British war warnings. Gurri's case that the alarm is being used against populist challengers is for subscribers.
