## 1\. NZ's next government could be a four-party coalition. Get used to the new normal

*Grant Duncan - The Conversation*

- 📊 Duncan notes recent polls putting National and Labour's combined vote possibly below 60%, the lowest ever. Results below 30%, or even 25%, may become normal for both.
- 🌍 Political fragmentation is advanced in proportional systems abroad. In Denmark's 2026 election the Social Democrats won most seats on 21.8%, and a four-party minority coalition took ten weeks to form.
- 🇩🇪 In Germany the CDU/CSU is polling below 20% and the SPD below 15%, while AfD leads in the high 20s under an MMP-like system.
- ⚖️ On the Waitangi Tribunal, Te Pāti Māori and the Greens want recommendations binding; ACT and NZ First propose winding it up once historical claims are settled. The centrist consensus for gradual biculturalism, he says, is weaker than assumed.
- 📉 A late-2024 1News Verian poll had 39% saying they did not know enough about ACT's Treaty Principles Bill to support or oppose it; only 36% opposed. Another poll had 52% saying they did not really understand Treaty principles.
- 🧓 Progressive optimism that "grumpy old white men" will die out has failed elsewhere. He cites One Nation gains among millennials in Australia and younger US cohorts tilting toward Trump between 2020 and 2024.
- 🗳️ Polarised opinion on the tribunal, he argues, helps smaller parties grow on both flanks while National and Labour's "big tents" cannot hold today's disputes.
- 📰 Adaptation means multi-constituency coalition building, dropping pre-election "ruling out", and less horse-race punditry about leaders resigning on a poll number.
- 💡 Takeaway: voters should get used to a four-party government. Internationally that is normal; talk of a "hung parliament" need not follow.

## 2\. I wrote this in 2008 and wouldn't change a word

*Karl du Fresne - Karl du Fresne*

- 🗳️ Du Fresne reprints an 18-year-old MMP critique and says he would not change a word, even if United Future, the Tight Five and Alamein Kopu references are dated.
- 📜 MMP arose, he writes, as a reaction to FPP outcomes where National won in 1978 and 1981 despite fewer votes, and Social Credit took 21% in 1981 for only two seats.
- 😤 Voters also resented major parties pursuing policies never put to the electorate or breaking promises, creating a mood to punish politicians via third-party checks.
- 📊 The 1992 indicative referendum had 85% for change on 55% turnout; 70% of that minority chose MMP. The binding 1993 vote passed narrowly on election day.
- ✅ Credit where due: after 2005 he counted 39 women, 21 Māori, four Pacific and two Asian MPs among 121\. Broader minority representation is real.
- 📋 Against that, party lists reward loyalists and "backroom toadies", letting people rejected by electorates into Parliament. List MPs answer to the party, not a constituency.
- 🤝 Minor-party voters cannot know which major partner they will end up with. In 2005 NZ First and United Future backed Labour largely to keep the Greens out, despite conservative bases.
- 🐕 The damning flaw, he says, is the tail wagging the dog: small parties extract influence far beyond their support, from the Tight Five deals to Labour backing Bradford's anti-smacking bill for Green support.
- 💡 Takeaway: MMP transferred more power to politicians while cutting accountability. Desire for vengeance, he concludes, is a poor basis for constitutional reform.

## 3\. RODNEY HIDE - Luxon: Gone By Morning Tea

*Rodney Hide - Brash & Mitchell*

- 🎙️ Hide opens with an imagined scene: Chris Luxon telling a shed of high-vis blokes that the future of world leadership is white and male.
- 📱 In the sketch, the clip hits the internet before Luxon is out of the shed.
- 📺 TVNZ would have a field day, he writes, and so would every newsroom north of Bluff.
- 🟢 The Greens would issue a statement before Luxon had left the car park.
- 🏢 Business NZ would... (the free RSS excerpt cuts off there).
- 🔗 The column links an X video from @the\_salty\_one\_ as the prompt for the thought experiment.
- ⚠️ Full text could not be fetched past Brash & Mitchell's signup wall; only the \~79-word RSS truncate is available.
- 💡 Takeaway (thin): from the free scrap alone, Hide is staging a media double-standard thought experiment about Luxon. Expand from the site before scheduling.

## 4\. National's New Favourite Subject

*Liam Hehir - The Blue Review*

- 📚 Hehir says National has taken ownership of education this cycle. Last month's Taxpayers' Union-Curia poll rated National best on education; six months earlier Labour led the same series.
- 🔤 For decades many NZ schools used whole-language or balanced literacy with less systematic phonics than structured-literacy advocates wanted.
- 📉 By the time National took office, barely half of Year 8 students were at the expected reading level, and barely over a third in writing. Schools that adopted structured literacy reported interventions falling.
- ✅ Erica Stanford made structured literacy compulsory, added phonics checks, mandated an hour a day of reading, writing and maths, banned cell phones, and began replacing a skills-based curriculum with year-by-year knowledge.
- 📈 Regular attendance rose to nearly two-thirds in Term 2, up from just under three-fifths a year earlier. Early maths and writing checks show some gains, not yet a nationwide trend.
- 🎓 The government is also committed to replacing NCEA with a simpler qualification built around clearer standards and subject knowledge.
- 🥊 In the TVNZ leaders' debate, Luxon dominated Hipkins on education, calling him the worst education minister and highlighting the phone-ban reversal. Hipkins blamed Covid.
- 🎬 Jack Tame pushed Hipkins into conceding Labour would axe the compulsory hour of reading, writing and maths. Hehir says expect that clip often before 7 November.
- 💡 Takeaway (isFreemail=false; free preview then paywall/claim): the free stretch is solid on the education record and debate. Paid continue is offered via "claim my free post".

## 5\. There will never be another Jeffrey Archer

*Alexander Larman - The Spectator Australia*

- 🕯️ Larman marks Jeffrey Archer's death at 86, between writing sessions at his Westminster penthouse while publicising Adam and Eve, billed as his final book.
- 🎩 Archer, he writes, lived larger than anyone in his orbit: Conservative peer, bestselling novelist, and failed London mayoral hopeful who compared himself to Dick Whittington.
- 🏛️ As an MP he backed causes more often associated with the left: free museum entry, lowering the age of homosexual consent, and removing VAT from theatre tickets.
- 💸 Only Archer, Larman says, could write Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less to dodge bankruptcy after sinking money into the fraudulent Aquablast company, then derail the prosecution by a separate legal mess over stolen suits.
- ⛓️ Scandals that would finish most people, including a four-year prison sentence, instead produced a prison trilogy and a return to Krug-and-shepherd's-pie parties without lasting grudges.
- 🎓 Larman met him once at Trinity College, Oxford, after release: a barnstorming talk comparing himself to the Count of Monte Cristo, Papillon and Ronnie Barker in Porridge, then a wink about an interview "if you bring her along".
- 🎭 He remembers Archer as a rogue who contributed to the gaiety of nations, charming, amusing and appalling in equal measure.
- 💡 Takeaway: like Hamlet on his father, Larman is sorry he shall not look upon Archer's like again.

## 6\. October 7 has changed Israel forever

*Avraham Russell Shalev - spiked*

- 🇮🇱 For Israelis, Shalev writes, the world splits into before and after 7 October 2023, when Hamas killed more than 1,200 civilians and soldiers.
- 🌐 Three years on, Western "peace-processors" barely paused. Biden kept pushing two states; Cameron floated recognition; Norway, Spain and Ireland recognised in May 2024; France, Canada and the UK followed in September 2025.
- 🎯 Hamas's Khalil al-Hayya told the New York Times the slaughter aimed to "change the equation" and put Palestine back on the table. Shalev says in that regard Hamas succeeded.
- 📜 He traces Hamas to the Muslim Brotherhood, citing historians on fascist antisemitic borrowing, and the Khaybar slogan invoked by founder Shaykh Ahmed Yasin.
- 🕌 Attitudes are not confined to Hamas: the PA's endowments ministry told mosques to praise the attack; Fatah's Jibril Rajoub justified it; PA schools celebrate the massacre.
- 🏛️ Abbas's Khazar denial of Jewish peoplehood, and Arafat's claim at Camp David that the Temple never existed (or stood in Yemen), show rejection of Jewish ties to the land.
- 🚀 After Sharon's 2005 Gaza disengagement, Hamas took over in 2007 and built rocket reach from Sderot to Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, culminating in 2,200 rockets in 20 minutes on October 7.
- ⛰️ Judea and Samaria are fifteen times larger than Gaza and overlook Israel's population centres. A Palestinian state there, he argues, would become a base for attacks.
- 💡 Takeaway: Israelis left and right now see Palestinian statehood as an existential threat. October 7 drove another nail into that coffin.

## 7\. Never forget the evil of October 7

*Rowan Dean - The Spectator Australia*

- 📞 Dean recalls David Adler of the Australian Jewish Association ringing him three years ago as reports from Israel turned into the October 7 massacre.
- 🩸 A text from Adler he never imagined: "Beheaded babies have been found in a kibbutz."
- ⛔ No political cause, he writes, justifies that sadistic depravity. Moral relativism's "hurt people hurt people" line is, in his words, cover for savagery.
- ⚔️ Israel's only course, he argues, was to rescue hostages and eradicate Hamas; America's should have been destroying the Islamist regime in Tehran that sponsored Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis.
- 🏗️ After Israel handed Gaza to the Palestinians in 2005, glasshouses were smashed and a tunnel-and-weapons society geared to October 7 was built with Western aid.
- 💵 Adler helped persuade Julie Bishop to cancel $10 million a year to UNRWA; Penny Wong later restored and increased it.
- 🇦🇺 He lists Australian aftermaths: Lakemba fireworks, Opera House chants, Sydney Uni and Grace Tame intifada slogans, the Harbour Bridge march, synagogue attacks, and the Bondi Beach massacre.
- ✈️ Adler now lives in Israel, telling Dean he feels safer there than in Australia after death threats for speaking against antisemitism.
- 💡 Takeaway: never let anyone rebrand that orgy of sexual violence as political resistance. It was sick and evil.

## 8\. UK Police Arrest 15-Year-Old Over Posts Mocking Politician

*Cam Wakefield - Reclaim The Net*

- 🚓 Four West Midlands officers arrested a 15-year-old Reform UK activist at home over Facebook posts mocking Conservative councillor Simon Bennett's attire at Wolverhampton council meetings.
- 💻 Police seized his phone and laptop.
- 🐇 Posts included calling Bennett's look like a "rent boy", criticising shorts and trainers at a scrutiny committee, and Photoshopping rabbit ears with a gag about rabbits devouring Tory credibility.
- 📝 Bennett reported the posts as "quite personal about my appearance," after council advice to go to police.
- ⚖️ Officers reportedly cited harassment, malicious communications, hate crime, or "to do with social media." The boy, identified only as Fraser, was bailed and banned from Wolverhampton council meetings.
- ❓ Police have not explained why four officers were needed.
- 🛡️ The Free Speech Union intends to sue for wrongful arrest and false imprisonment, calling the investigation an egregious interference with his rights.
- ⏳ Fraser, who says he criticised Labour more than Conservatives online, still awaits a charging decision.
- 💡 Takeaway: four officers and a seized laptop over outfit mockery is, Wakefield writes, why police keep losing public trust.

## 9\. DAVID ROUND: Forest and Bird Drift Left

*David Round - Brash & Mitchell*

- 🐦 Round resigned from Forest and Bird years ago over its push on undefined radical "Treaty principles", which he says harmed conservation, and over unanswered letters.
- 📰 Kiwiblog flagged a new "campaign" coalition of Climate Club Aotearoa, the Social Change Collective and Forest and Bird Youth aiming to lift youth turnout 15%, especially among rural, Māori and Pasifika rangatahi.
- 🗳️ Enrolling eligible voters is fine, he says, but this is an outright attempt to change the government, not a policy scorecard for conservation.
- 🧑‍💼 Co-convenor Ethan Reille was a Labour candidate and PSA organiser running its own "Change the Government" campaign, so the leftward slant is obvious.
- 🏢 He does not believe Youth involvement lacks central-office approval; F&B keeps a tight rein on branches.
- ⚖️ By casting left parties as conservation's natural allies and the right as enemies, F&B creates the politicisation it claims to deplore.
- 🏛️ If the centre-right wins, why would ministers back an organisation that has declared itself the government's enemy? Why would conservative conservationists stay members?
- 📜 Claiming political neutrality is, he writes, an outright lie that would have founder Captain Sanderson turning in his grave. He floats a Charities Commission complaint, while doubting activist-friendly judges will act.
- 💡 Takeaway: F&B's leftward drift does a grave disservice to the cause it once existed to promote.

## 10\. Gaza: the most lied about war in history

*Brendan O'Neill - spiked*

- 📊 On the third anniversary of 7 October, O'Neill says the left's "genocide" and "starvation" case against Israel is crumbling under Gaza's own numbers.
- 📉 Hamas-run Ministry of Health's 2025 Annual Mortality Report lists 24,650 deaths: 17,286 "war operations", 1,584 accidents, and 5,780 other causes, about the same "normal" death total as before the war.
- 👶 Malnutrition caused 4.1% of infant deaths in 2025 versus 4.4% in 2021, two years before Hamas's attack. Births: 50,227 in 2025, about 1.2% population growth, higher than the UK's \~0.3%.
- 🍽️ An August survey put acute child malnutrition (WHZ) in Gaza at 0.5%, roughly Germany's level, versus 4.3% in Iran and 16.3% in Sudan.
- 📦 Outside an early-2025 border-closure window he calls too harsh, studies found mean energy available around 3,163 calories per person per day, plus millions of tonnes of food and a WHO polio drive for over a million Gazan children.
- 📰 On "journalist" deaths, he says the BBC in at least 53 cases labelled as journalists men later claimed as terrorists by Hamas and other groups.
- ⚔️ Contested civilian-to-terrorist death ratios of 1:4 or 1:2 would, he argues, be treated as normal or good in modern warfare.
- 💔 He does not deny Gazan suffering. Hamas's willingness to sacrifice Palestinian life for Jew-hate made October 7 a tragedy for Jews first, then for Gazans used as disposable bodies.
- 💡 Takeaway: branding Jews' fightback as Nazi-like genocide is, he writes, the great lie of the age, and posterity will not celebrate it.
