## 1\. DR DAVID SMYLIE: I left New Zealand over an email

*Dr David Smylie - Brash and Mitchell*

- 📧 A GP with almost 40 years' experience sent one private, four-sentence reply to a sales rep late at night. She had opened her email "Ate Marie Everyone". He couldn't resist the typo.
- 🚨 Nine days later she called it "offensive and inappropriate". The same day her manager reported him to the Medical Council.
- 🙏 He wrote an apology within days. His lawyers asked twice for it to be passed on. It never was. The rep later told investigators an apology would have made her feel a lot better.
- ⚖️ The verdict: "objectively racist, offensive, and insensitive". Whether he meant harm was "of little consequence". No complaint had ever been made about his care. The Council's word was "yet".
- 🧠 The "Educational Programme" was twelve months with a Council-approved supervisor who reported on him every month. There were readings on Te Tiriti and institutional racism, and two essays on structural racism. At $125 an hour plus GST, paid by him.
- ✍️ He apologised to her directly and she accepted. The programme went ahead anyway. He sat all twelve sessions. He refused to write the essays, out of principle. So he left and now practises overseas.
- 😴 He lost more than 10kg over it. His advice to health professionals: don't come to New Zealand until the regulators get back to their core purposes.
- 🏥 This while Health NZ reports severe staffing shortages and goes hunting for staff overseas.
- 🔪 My take? We lost a senior GP over a joke about a typo. Then we pay recruiters to find his replacement. The Medical Council isn't protecting patients. It's running a re-education camp, and charging the inmates.

## 2\. Democracy Briefing: Business leaders give lobbying reform a welcome boost

*Bryce Edwards - Democracy Project*

- 📊 The Herald's "Mood of the Boardroom" survey asked business leaders to rate election policies from 1 to 5\. Opportunity's one-year cooling-off period for ministers turned lobbyists scored 3.33.
- 📝 Logging all lobbying contact with ministers under the OIA scored 3.09\. Only 34 of the 99 policies rated got past 3.
- 🏦 Sam Stubbs of Simplicity listed "too many lobbyists and easy access to influence in Wellington" among the country's top issues.
- 🗳️ A national survey in the NZ Medical Journal found 88.6% backed mandatory rules for lobbyists. Support was above 80% among the voters of every party.
- 🛑 National went the other way. Paul Goldsmith halted officials' work on lobbying reform, even though Nicola Willis backed a register and a cooling-off period in opposition.
- 🛒 Willis has since said she "felt the full force" of supermarket lobbying.
- 🌍 New Zealand still has no mandatory register and no cooling-off period. Three-quarters of OECD countries have cooling-off rules.
- 💰 Business isn't sold on everything. Opportunity's $30,000 donation cap scored just 2.35, about the same as Labour's capital gains tax.
- 🔪 My take? The revolving door between the Beehive and the lobby shops is real, and both colours have used it. But don't let the Greens and Opportunity pose as the cleanskins. Watch who funds them before you hand them the rulebook.

## 3\. RICHARD PREBBLE: Is the health system collapsing?

*Richard Prebble - Brash and Mitchell*

- 🏥 Prebble calls our hospitals a "monolithic, Soviet-style, government-owned" system. Every election brings the horror stories.
- 📺 This year TVNZ's News at Six has gone overboard, adding special investigations.
- 📊 Polling says seven in ten think health is in crisis. He asks which came first, the coverage or the polls.
- 🛏️ In the 2002 campaign he caught pneumonia and spent his first night at North Shore Hospital in a corridor bed. Corridor beds are nothing new.
- 👩‍⚕️ The numbers: 27.8% more nurses in 2025 than 2020, and 16.2% more doctors.
- 📈 Health NZ's latest quarterly results show improvements in 19 of 25 measures on a year earlier.
- 🙄 Labour's big health announcement this week was two more reviews.
- 🇸🇬 Singapore gets some of the world's best outcomes with a very different model. Why aren't we debating how it does it?
- 🔪 My take? Union reps on the six o'clock news every night isn't journalism. It's a campaign ad. And Labour's fix for a system it broke is two more reviews. Righto.

## 4\. Theory: Labour are deliberately throwing this election

*Half Done - halfdone.wordpress.com*

- 🤷 The blogger has no idea why Labour would throw the election. But he says all the evidence is there.
- 📉 Labour has done nothing to come to terms with its 2017 to 2023 record. Most of its best MPs have left, and the systems that picked the useless ones are still running.
- 🩺 The big promise is three free GP visits. As Kiwiblog points out, that could need 600 extra GPs, and there's no plan to find them.
- 👩‍⚕️ Ayesha Verrall has admitted many people seeing the "Free GP" will actually see a nurse.
- 💊 Free prescriptions cost $74.5 million a year and only help people not already exempt. Labour's own policy lists the exemptions.
- 🏠 The $20 fare cap is nice. But the cost that hurt Aucklanders was rent, and Labour's policy says nothing on what drove it up.
- 🤦 Labour leads its policy page with the cost of living, the crisis it created. There's also an "ED Recover Plan". Guess who broke ED?
- 🧑‍🎓 In Ilam, Labour is running Rata Jamieson, 21, who only joined the party in 2024\. Her blurb says right-wing politicians let Ilam down. The last MP who did was Labour's Sarah Pallett.
- 🔪 My take? Labour is campaigning on the bill it ran up and asking you to pay it twice. Thrown or just useless, the result is the same.

## 5\. New Zealand election - a dud on foreign policy

*Liberty Scott*

- ❓ What would Luxon or Hipkins do if China invaded Taiwan? Or if Iran was found inciting attacks on Jewish targets here, as in Australia? Nobody knows.
- 🌏 The world hasn't been this dangerous since the Cold War. Our shipping lanes, fuel, parts and medicines all depend on peace and open trade.
- 🇦🇺 Our interests line up with Australia. The US is an unpredictable ally at best, so we can't keep free riding. Expand defence and the Australian relationship.
- 🇨🇳 China is our biggest trading partner and an extractive one. Cyber attacks, stolen IP, and even kiwifruit cuttings taken to boost its own production.
- 📺 Beijing dominates our Chinese-language media. And Qatar, Hamas's biggest ally, holds the rights to a free-to-air TV news network here.
- 🇮🇱 Hipkins uses "genocide" against Israel but never notes Hamas's slaughter. Scott calls it "intellectually lazy, morally bankrupt and racist".
- 🍉 The Greens and TPM are worse. Both would cut defence and treat China, Russia and the US as moral equals. TPM wants neutrality on Taiwan and Ukraine, but not on Israel.
- 🇪🇺 The EU free trade deal lets EU activists sue us for not keeping climate policies. More Ardern and Hipkins virtue signalling.
- 🔪 My take? The only party leader who has actually run foreign affairs is Winston Peters. The other two can't answer the Taiwan question, and the Greens and TPM would give the wrong answer.

## 6\. RODNEY HIDE: Two votes. Use them.

*Rodney Hide - Brash and Mitchell*

- 🗳️ David Farrar wrote that Chris Bishop has two paths back: win Hutt South, or National gets at least two list MPs. Both "looking far from certain".
- 📉 Hide reads that as an admission National will get no list MPs at all. With National below 30%, its 800,000 or so party votes deliver not one extra MP.
- ➕ If just 20% of them party-voted NZ First or ACT, that's six or seven extra MPs.
- ⚖️ Ten MMP elections. Eight decided by five or fewer MPs. Voting smart matters.
- 🧮 Last time, electorate votes for ACT and NZ First candidates delivered no extra MPs. Given to National, they'd have won nine more seats.
- ✅ His formula: electorate vote National everywhere, Epsom and Tamaki included. Party vote NZ First or ACT everywhere.
- 🏛️ Yes, that means a bigger Parliament. Small price, he says, against the Greens and TPM calling the shots.
- 🙄 National and its allies say strategic voting is anti-democratic. Epsom has done it for seven elections in a row.
- 🔪 My take? Two ticks National is a wasted party vote in an overhang. Hide's maths is right. Tick NZ First and make it count.

## 7\. RICHARD PREBBLE: Cannot be correct

*Richard Prebble - Brash and Mitchell*

- 🚔 Labour has issued no law-and-order policies. None.
- 💬 Hipkins says Labour is focused on the cost of living. Prebble: "Yeah, right."
- 🤔 Maybe Labour thinks the coalition's policies are perfect. He doesn't think so.
- 🗂️ He sat on Labour's policy committee. The only other time he recalls Labour skipping a manifesto policy was when the committee was hopelessly split.
- 📊 His guess: any law-and-order policy the committee can agree on is one Labour's own polling says voters hate.
- 👮 He was Labour's Justice spokesman and its Police Minister. Labour MPs had him sacked as spokesman for criticising soft sentences.
- 🔄 Then, when polling said Labour looked soft on crime, the same MPs insisted he be made Police Minister.
- 🔒 Inconceivable Labour has no policy on crime, sentencing, prisons, drugs and gangs. Conceivable it has policies it won't show you until it's in government.
- 🔪 My take? Labour sacked its own Justice spokesman for calling out soft sentences. Now it won't even tell you its plan. Whatever's in that drawer, you'll find out after you've voted.

## 8\. Revisiting Hate Speech

*David Harvey - A Halfling’s View*

- 📜 In 2022 the Justice Minister announced the Human Rights Act would add religious belief to its hate speech categories.
- 🔥 It never happened. Hipkins withdrew it in his "policy bonfire".
- ⚖️ The 2022 categories remain: colour, race, ethnic or national origins.
- 🗣️ The debate went into hibernation until Brian Tamaki woke it up, accusing India's Narendra Modi of targeting Indian Christians.
- 😡 Tamaki then said: "Let’s purge New Zealand of Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims." He also asked why not burn mosques and temples. "Tit for tat."
- 📣 Islamic, Hindu and Sikh groups, plus Amnesty International, want the "gaps" in our hate speech laws closed.
- 👮 Even so, Tamaki has been charged under section 131 of the Human Rights Act for inciting racial disharmony.
- 🗳️ It's election year, so parties are being pushed to declare a position on what's being called "hate provocation".
- 🔪 My take? Tamaki is charged under the law we already have. That's the point. Nobody needs a new blasphemy law to deal with one loudmouth, and the Greens would use it on everyone else.

## 9\. How Censorship Works

*Jeffrey A. Tucker - The Epoch Times*

- 🌾 The Holodomor, Stalin's man-made famine in Ukraine in 1932 and 1933, killed as many as 5 million. Tucker calls it a genocide.
- 📰 The West knew nothing at the time. The New York Times' Walter Duranty, a Pulitzer winner, wrote: "There is no famine or actual starvation nor is there likely to be."
- 🕵️ Welsh journalist Gareth Jones, then Malcolm Muggeridge of the Manchester Guardian, told the truth. Muggeridge was largely dismissed as a conservative alarmist.
- 💉 Tucker says it happened again. The CDC's V-safe app signed up more than 10 million people after the Covid shot, and he says nobody was reading the reports.
- 📋 His figures: a third reported side effects that interrupted their lives, and 7 to 10 percent sought medical care. The automated reply was "call your doctor".
- 🚫 He says Facebook groups for the injured were taken down under White House pressure, and doctors who raised the alarm were investigated by their boards.
- 📂 It took years of court action to get the data. Reports of possible injury had reached 700,000 by 10 September 2021.
- 🔗 His point: censorship today runs on careerism, advertisers and fear, not edicts. "It relies on people who are afraid to break censorship with the truth."
- 🔪 My take? Whatever you make of the numbers, the method is familiar. Ask Dr Smylie in item 1\. You don't need a gulag when the regulator, the editor and the advertiser all want the same silence.

## 10\. I Documented ISIS’s Crimes. Then I Visited Auschwitz.

*Omar Mohammed - The Free Press*

- 🗣️ "Go back to Poland" has been screamed at Jews across the West since 7 October 2023, including at Columbia University. Poland, where their ancestors were exterminated.
- 🏙️ Omar Mohammed, an Iraqi historian, was in Mosul when ISIS took the city. He didn't flee. He documented its atrocities on an anonymous blog, Mosul Eye, one thin wall away from a senior ISIS leader.
- ✈️ He escaped Iraq in 2017\. After years of hearing the chant, he decided to visit the camps himself.
- 🚌 He landed in Warsaw on 24 August. On the bus into the city, he says, his body reacted as if he had smelled the ash of the dead.
- 📼 He first learned about the Holocaust in Mosul around 2004, recording WWII documentaries off satellite TV in case they disappeared.
- 🏫 His old school stood on the ruins of Mosul's Jewish school, which Saddam demolished in 2000.
- 🕯️ His mentor Walter Reich, former director of the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, answered the chant by taking his children and grandchildren to Bełżec, where much of his family was murdered, to say kaddish.
- 💪 When Omar told him he was going to Auschwitz, Reich wrote back: "Have courage, Omar." He asked Reich to teach him the kaddish.
- 🔪 My take? A Muslim historian who lived under ISIS heard that chant and went to learn the kaddish. Hold that up against the Greens and TPM, who keep parroting the other side's propaganda here.
