A Life in the Day of Covid

And so it was that I tested positive for Covid, away from my New Zealand home.

As a household, we are currently five, the usual four, with the temporary addition of me, grandma.

My son-in-law was away for several weeks and returned from South Australia with Covid a month ago.  A very mild dose, he had a headache, no fever, no cold or flu symptoms, and kept working in isolation, while we left his meals for him outside his door.  He made a good recovery.

Then our six-year-old got it three weeks later.  She had no cold or flu symptoms at all, not even a sniffle, but was very sleepy, tested positive, and then slept an entire 24 hours with sips of water to keep her hydrated.  She then had a happy week off school with absolutely no other symptoms.  She later tested negative, and this week returned to school.

Her brother is eight and is asymptomatic.  He is able to attend school.

Last Friday I had a very busy day and an early night.

Saturday was also very busy, and I slept early and well.

On Sunday I woke with very slight nasal congestion and returned a positive test.  No headache.  No fever.  No heavy limbs or aching joints.  Most assuredly no resemblance to any form of flu.  A very, very mild cold that descended no lower than my nose.  Pre-Covid, it wasn’t one to take a sick day for.  It wasn’t even worthy of a packet of Throaties.

On Monday I was a bit more ‘coldy’, very tired and slept much of the day, fortified by cups of tea left by my lovely daughter, who is required to work from home as my close contact and who has not had Covid – but is triple-jabbed.

Tuesday, I woke feeling fine, with the slight symptoms even less so, and so I was up and at ‘em without any issues at all and am isolating as required.

So, is Omicron highly transmissible as is claimed?  Highly contagious?  This is not our experience, with almost three weeks between the first and second cases, then a week to the next, assuming we have in fact caught it from each other.  We still have two completely free of it.  Two of us are still required to be in isolation, and yes, we have all met all the testing and isolation requirements throughout, which has meant adults working from home for several weeks.  While we have all taken every measure of precaution and isolation requirements, locking a six-year-old in her room by herself for a week was just not going to happen.

This account is not intended as a generalisation.  But we surely cannot be unique.  We are all (excluding the children) as jabbed as pincushions, we eat well, the family is extremely fit and active, no-one takes any medication for anything, the outdoors/outback life is usual, the backyard swimming pool is seldom unused.  Screen-time is strictly rationed.  There is soccer and swimming training.  There are pets to tend to, things to make and things to do and so the children are active, inquisitive, and occupied.  Everyone is fit, strong, healthy and life is happy and full.

Keeping fit and healthy is a basic prerequisite for good health, so why oh why is the New Zealand Government still not making any mention of that, but worse, now actively preventing many kids from participating in sporting endeavours and other loved pastimes.

Why do they continue cranking up the fear machine that keeps people locked away so that fresh air and exercise and sun with its free Vitamin D to strengthen the immune system are unavailable to many?

The ‘unvaxxed class’ of Covid New Zealand – yip, yip, that is what it is.  We should never have been mandated into having the vaccine, let alone the once-again strident calls to be boosted.  For many of us, this is a bridge too far; we have had two jabs that we didn’t ever want, but without which we were denied access to resources we needed, and we don’t want and won’t have the third, or the fourth.

“Those aged 18 and over can receive a Pfizer booster 3 months (93 days) after completing their primary course to provide better protection against Omicron. Reducing the interval to 3 months means an additional 1 million New Zealanders are eligible to receive their booster before the end of summer.”

So what science is the Government following this time?

“Marco Cavaleri, who is the head of Biological Health Threats and Vaccines Strategy at the EMA, said that the repeated vaccination within a short time period is not advised. He also mentioned that giving too many Covid booster doses, after every 3 or 4 months, will result in issues with the immune response, and “the immune response may end up not being as good as we would like it to be.”
“Cavaleri warned against overloading the immune system with repeated immunization. As per the results of a preliminary research at an Israeli hospital last month, it was also reported that a 4th vaccine jab will not produce enough antibodies to prevent infection from the Omicron variant.”

And the Government and its me-too parties continue the rhetoric, the call to jab arms, the support for ongoing mandates despite there being science counter to that position.

And are there any studies that show how mild Omicron is?  It turns out there are.

“Five new studies from around the world reveal encouraging findings about the Omicron variant of COVID-19 and say that it does not cause serious illness among most of those infected with it, Channel 12 News reported on Thursday evening.

According to the report, the studies indicate that the disease caused by the Omicron is different from the disease caused by the previous variants.

The studies were performed in laboratories in Hong Kong, Cambridge, Japan, Belgium and Liverpool. All five studies similarly find that Omicron does not reach the victim’s lungs and damages them as much as other variants.

Another study in South Africa indicates that the T cells of the immune system know how to deal with Omicron, both after vaccination and after infection.

However, it is still unclear whether the absolute ability of the Omicron to harm the body is small, or whether vaccination and exposure prevent it from causing severe morbidity.”

RATs are readily available where I am currently, without drama or fanfare or queues, and dispensed according to dwelling occupancy numbers on request and free of charge.

So, this is Omicron?  This is what New Zealand is again being mandated and bankrupted for?  It is still a health issue we need to test for to confirm we have it, but now New Zealanders are being urged to not test, as requested by Jacinda Ardern.

“One of the major issues still continues to be people who are worried coming to be tested. I understand your anxiety, but please if you are not symptomatic or you are not a contact who needs to be tested, please do not attend our testing stations. It is standing in the way of people who need to be tested.”

So, the labs can’t keep up?  There aren’t enough RATs?  What a surprise. It was all about testing and tracing, now about not testing.  Are you confused?

Jacinda continues to spin the narrative to whatever suits her agenda best.  She is drunk on power.  She must go.  If only we had other parties we could trust and rely on to support and hear us.  But we don’t, not anymore.
