May 21st,2023.

Continuing on from last week’s picture of life in England this week was the first year of the annual Lostfest since Covid. It had missed three years and the organisers were worried that people may have forgotten it.

Well, the public turned out in force, it was a beautiful sunny day, 22c and many of the food stall holders sold out by early evening. There were Morris dancers, male choirs, drum bands and musicians and groups on the main stage.

The festivities went on until 9 pm, with the bar running dangerously low on supplies and when everyone started to make their way home, there were no incidents to report to the police and just a couple of cases of sunburn attended to by the on-site ambulance. With a great, friendly atmosphere it showed that away from the major centres, life can still be enjoyable in the UK. What was noticeable was a spirit of community enjoyment and the presence of a large number of family groups.

A full programme of activities, from 10 am until 9 pm.

In the town square, we had a choice of street food stalls serving Mexican, Thai, Paella and Spanish, Pizza and vegetarian mezze.

Over on the green were found candy floss, local ice cream, barbecue and so on. The bar ran out of beer and had to send out for fresh supplies.

The square, nearly reading for the start of the day.

Looks good.

The non-Kiwi barby did a good trade!!! If a trifle overdone.

Fishermen’s friends, Cornish choir.

The day went off at full swing, with the huge crowd enjoying the offerings.

It is good to look at the pictures of a small town/village putting on a show, staffed and organised completely by volunteers.  Non-stop music and entertainment on the stage, four hours of street entertainers – Morris dancers, Kernow drum groups, Male voice choirs and so on.

There was a full complement of incomers and tourists, all enjoying themselves.

I was speaking to the organisers the day after the show, as they were clearing up. The sum total was Police incidents – nil, medical attention – minimal, just cuts and bruises from children falling over.

It was a marvellous distraction from all the social rubbish that is being inflicted on the UK at the moment, with no demonstrators, no single interest groups spoiling it and just people having a good time.
