A Story Behind the India Free Trade Agreement

Best of MountainsideFM.

There is a problem. Fonterra sold off our NZ value-added, world-renowned dairy branding to a multinational. This is a major obstacle to taking advantage of what the Indian domestic retail market offers.

New Zealand, in the 1970s, supported and encouraged the dairy industry in India. It became known as Operation Flood.

  • New Zealand helped India become self-sufficient in dairy
  • That success is now one of the main reasons India protects its dairy sector so fiercely
  • Which in turn makes a modern NZ–India dairy trade deal extremely difficult

In simple terms, NZ helped build a competitor – and a very effective one.
