An ACT Party campaign hoarding belonging to candidate Matt Yovich was shot multiple times on a rural
roadside south of Whangārei in the early hours of Monday morning.
Residents reported hearing up to seven shotgun blasts around 2am. One nearby homeowner, who asked not to be named, said two children were asleep at the end of a house closest to the gunfire. “It’s put everyone on edge. There are a dozen homes within 250 metres. At 2am all you can hear is somebody emptying a shotgun? It puts the shivers up you,” they told RNZ.
Photographs of the scene showed several bullet holes through the head and torso area of Yovich’s image on the sign, alongside scattered casings. Yovich said the property owner called police and asked for the hoarding to be removed. “There was apparently seven shots … mainly through the head and body,” he said.
Police confirmed they are investigating the matter as wilful damage.
