When news broke that actor Alec Baldwin had accidentally shot a cinematographer and injured the director on a movie set, it was too good an opportunity for many not to gloat. After all, Baldwin is the Hollywood blowhard leftist, par excellence. In these divided, divisive times, any misfortune for someone on “the other side” is seized on by their enemies, right or left, with unseemly glee.
So, for many on the right, it was a gift of righteous karma from the political gods. For many on the left, it was also an opportunity to clamour even louder for gun control.
(Lost in all this, of course, is the brutal fact that a young woman with a promising career is dead. There’s points to score, after all.)
But, what are the left to do when one of their biggest mouths is suddenly, if inadvertently, left with literal blood on their hands?
Why, blame the right, of course.
New conspiracy suggests that a Trump supporter secretly loaded the ‘prop-gun’ with real bullets to punish Baldwin for his parodies.
United Kingdom dissident and political science author Johannes Velterop believes that Trump may be behind the death of 42-year-old cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, not Alec Baldwin.
This is not just any looney, mind you. Velterop is an actual scientist. A former director of Nature, no less. Instrumental in setting up BioMed Central and currently Director of Open Access at science publishing behemoth, Springer. Supposedly, then, logic and evidence are at the core of his world-view.
Except, apparently not.

Venterop insisted that he was “not engaging in conspiracy misinformation” but was instead demanding a proper investigation into the political alignment and motivation on the armourer who loaded the weapon.
Trump Derangement Syndrome really knows no bounds.
That goes for too many on the right, as well — who’re witch-hunting with the same deranged zeal as leftists like Venterop:

Except that that just isn’t true. Nowhere in the LWC article are those claims made (perhaps the article in question has been edited, but the Wayback Machine doesn’t seem to think so).
Clearly, though, the right are trawling Gutierrez-Reed’s life as assiduously as any leftist mob on a Cancel Culture mission. The LWC article features a video dredged up by Twitter account Libs of Tik Tok (always good for a laugh, it must be admitted). The video is cringey, sure, but doesn’t seem any different from the dumb stuff millions of young women post on Tik Tok all the time.
Such are the times we live in: online mobs will exploit any misfortune and destroy the lives of anyone if it politically suits them. Left and right.
Whatever happened on the set of Rust was clearly unintentional. Whether it was negligent or criminally culpable is under investigation.
Certainly, there are many claims — many of them pre-dating the shooting — that the production was run badly and with a poor safety record. The truth of that, hopefully, will out.
In the meantime… enough of the looney conspiracy theories.
