Chris Finlayson used the co-governance model that he put up when he was National’s Treaty Negotiations Minister as the model for how wonderful co-governance could and would be. Like Chris Finlayson, Jacinda Ardern is planning on having the whole country run this way
Just so we are under no illusions, this is what Finlayson had to say about co-governance:
The government’s been under pressure to explain what it means by co-governance in the wake of its water and health reforms.
But as former Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Chris Finlayson explains, the concept itself is nothing new.
He says it’s time to accept it and go with the flow.
While he says there’s room for robust debate about the co-governance model between the Crown and iwi and hapu, Finlayson’s advice for dealing with the “sour right” behind the racist, resentful rhetoric: “We’ve just got to leave those losers behind and move on.
“They don’t like tangata whenua. They dream of a world that never was and never could be,” he says.
Finlayson set up a number of co-governance arrangements during his time as a National government minister between 2008 and 2017.
Finlayson takes The Detail back to the ground-breaking signing of the Treaty settlement between the Crown and Tainui in 1995, and explains how the settlement over raupatu claims led to the formation of the Waikato River Authority.
It became the genesis of other co-governance arrangements, giving iwi an opportunity to participate directly with local or regional government to provide advice or take part in the management of a particular resource.
Finlayson says there will be tensions and aggravations.
“That’s the price of moving on, just relax, just go with the flow.
“I simply say to people, one, there’s a new regime, get with it folks; two, Rome wasn’t built in a day.”

That is what the elites, like Finlayson, now firmly ensconced in the Treaty gravy train, and liberal elite hand-wringers like Jacinda Ardern want for us. They all tell us that it’ll be fine, nothing to worry about, look how great it is where it’s been put in place.
They’re all wrong. This is where it is all heading:
A former Department of Conservation ranger says plans to remove 55 backcountry huts in Te Urewera is “a shocking abuse of departmental power”.
“What we’re witnessing is the biggest case of backcountry vandalism ever committed in New Zealand being promulgated by the government department charged with the role of preserving those same structures, without consultation,” conservationist Pete Shaw told the Beacon.
Shaw said one of the huts had already been removed, and he had been told by a source from within Tuhoe authority Te Uru Taumatua that it plans to have the rest removed by the end of 2022.
He said Te Uru Taumatua stated in its annual plan that it wanted to get rid of the huts.
The annual plan, which is available to view on the Tuhoe authority’s website, states its intentions to “remove the western influences and their imprint within Te Urewera” and “establish a decommissioning of DOC structures and infrastructure programme. This includes a prioritisation of replacement”.
No mention is made of the timeframe for this work.
“They want to get all of them gone by Christmas,” Shaw said. “The whole lot. The reason for that is they are expecting a reaction and they want to get them out before anyone can put a halt to the process. The fact that they’ve already started has been kept really quiet. They’ve taken one hut out already, Kanohirua, and the plan is to keep going.
“[Conservation Minister Poto Williams] has definitely signed off on the plans to pull the huts out, which is just incredible. Everyone I speak to, including Tuhoe people, they’re just saying, ‘what’s going on here?’.”

And the reason Tuhoe want the huts gone?

“We remove the western influences and their imprint within Te Urewera. We regrow the belief in ourselves, and that our care practices by Tuhoe hands and hearts will lead the way.“

Co-governance means, to Tuhoe at least, the removal of everything that has its roots in “western influence”. If that isn’t racist then I don’t know what is. Imagine the outcry if a town declared that they wanted to remove all Maori influences and their imprint on the town.
I wonder though if Tuhoe are going to remove deer, pigs, rabbits, stoats, goats and other pests, or will they just let them run wild like they are now?
How about removing the “western influence” of hunters, fishermen, trampers and anyone else who isn’t Tuhoe from enjoying Te Urewera? You know that’s next, right? Maybe it’s already begun?

Remember too, that the Te Urewera settlement was done under the auspices of the Treaty of Waitangi, which Tuhoe never signed, but under which they make claims. You can’t get more “western influences” than insisting you get redress under a treaty you never signed.
But since they are talking about the removal of “western influences” how about the status of the national park, protected for all time by western laws, in a western influenced parliament, the same parliament that enacted the co-governance model that allows them to reject the very same “western influences”?
Yeah, nah, didn’t think they’d reject that sort of “western influences”.
I notice that “co-governance” means kicking out all white people and only having Tuhoe allowed in the park. Where exactly is the whole ‘co’ part of “co-governance”?
And Jacinda Ardern wants the entire country to be run this way.
What’s worse is that they are just going to force it all through without even bothering to ask you all if that is what you actually want.
We can’t expect our media to stand up to this. They are a lock for the Government. They are shabby little shills at best; bought, bribed and paid-for lackeys and propagandists for an out-of-control and increasingly authoritarian Government drunk on unfettered power.
That is why it is important that we grow fast and start showing the mainstream media what real journalists can do. It is in your power to halt this decline, it is in your power to support those organisations that reflect your values.
That’s why we are fundraising to hire staff. We are more than 13% of the way. But we can’t do it on thin air and good intentions. We need you to put your money where our mouth is. Next year is election year. It is vitally important that we are well-resourced to take the fight to this Government and hold them and the rest of the elites to account. They are coming for your way of life; give us your support so we can fight on your behalf.
