There’s an old saying in journalism: if it bleeds, it leads. That is, the media are more likely to report the extraordinary. “Man bites dog” is a far more interesting story than vice-versa.

The only problem with that is that it leads to a very skewed worldview for the uncritical media consumer. That’s why we tend, for instance, to believe without question that we live in uniquely violent and dangerous times, when in fact the opposite is true.

But still, no matter how aware I am of the statistical improbability of being mugged, I can’t help looking over my shoulder on a dark city street at night.

The same can be said to apply to the COVID-19 vaccines. Statistically, the incidence of at least deadly side-effects is (officially) very low. And yet…
A young trainee nurse has been hospitalised after multiple blood clots were discovered in her lung just weeks after she received the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Ellie Peacock, 18, received her first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine on March 31, a week before the government announced people under 50 would no longer be receiving the AstraZeneca jab due to blood clot concerns[…]

The trainee nurse works on a casual team in Brisbane that is regularly exposed to potential COVID-19 positive patients, making it imperative for her to receive the vaccine.

On April 18, more than two weeks after getting the jab, Ms Peacock presented to the Royal Brisbane Women’s Hospital emergency room with throbbing and tightness in her calf, which she says were “signs of clotting”.

Having had some unpleasant experience with blood clots myself, this is becoming a familiar enough story. Initially, ultrasound failed to identify a clot. Peacock was sent home, but later began experiencing chest pain and difficulty breathing.

At 2am on May 11 Ms Peacock was rushed to the hospital’s emergency department for the third time after having extreme breathing difficulties.

“I was sent home within six hours without further testing done and was told that it’s normal pain with pneumonia and that I need to put up with the pain until the medications start working,” she told the Courier Mail.

A couple of days later she visited her GP who discovered her oxygen levels had dropped to 90 per cent, resulting in her once again presenting to the hospital.

This time Ms Peacock insisted on more tests, which is when the true nature of her illness was discovered.

“After persisting for further testing, they finally found three blood clots in one lung,” the 18-year-old wrote on Instagram.

A blood clot in the lung is something I’d not wish on anyone. Frankly, the young lady is lucky to be alive.

The question, though, is whether the link with the AstraZeneca is something to be worried about. The media and government would evidently like us to think not.

As of Thursday last week, there have been a total of 18 thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS) cases likely linked to the AstraZeneca vaccine in Australia.

So far about 1.8 million doses of the vaccine have been administered across the country.

Last week there was a surge in blood clot cases following the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Three cases on May 13 were confirmed as TTS, while four were deemed “probable”.

Then there are the flood of anecdotal cases locally and overseas. Famously, guitar legend Eric Clapton reported a frightening reaction to the AstraZeneca vaccine. “I took the first jab of AZ and straight away had severe reactions which lasted ten days[…]About six weeks later I was offered and took the second AZ shot, but with a little more knowledge of the dangers. Needless to say the reactions were disastrous, my hands and feet were either frozen, numb or burning, and pretty much useless for two weeks, I feared I would never play again.”

As Clapton admits, he has underlying medical conditions which probably meant he “should never have gone near the needle”.

But here’s the kicker:

“But the propaganda said the vaccine was safe for everyone…”

And that’s probably the more salient point: propaganda.

While it certainly seems that, statistically, the risk from the vaccine is extremely low, so is the risk from COVID itself. In Australia and New Zealand, the risk of dying from COVID is about .0001%. So is the apparent risk of blood clots from the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Yet, we are told that the risk of the former is so great that entire cities must be locked down and international borders closed for the foreseeable future, but the risk of the latter is nothing at all to be worried about.

When the media and authorities are so selling such obviously conflicting narratives, is it any wonder that so many people are hesitant to enlist as apparent guinea-pigs in a population-wide experimental trial?
