There are times when a story comes across the desk that makes you stop and think – surely that can’t be right.
This is one of them.
In the lead-up to ANZAC Day, the RSA Poppy Appeal – run by the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services’ Association – once again set out to do what it has done for generations: honour the fallen, support veterans and give the public a chance to show their respect.
It’s a tradition that most New Zealanders and Australians understand instinctively. You see the poppies in supermarkets, outside shops, in shopping centres – quietly, respectfully and without fuss.
Which is why what has come out of Sylvia Park is so surprising.
