Auckland DHB: An Absolutely Biased Guide to Auckland Local Elections

At the start of this project, I promised to try to rate every contest and candidate in the Auckland Local elections. That includes District Health Boards. They’re as numerous as measles cases, as successful as the Warriors and more boring than Steve Braunias’ Secret Diary columns. There are twenty District Health Boards administering the $20 billion public health system and for reasons I just don’t understand, we elect some of their board members. Incredibly, you and I can be elected to a District Health Board.

Forget medical school, this is as easy as 1,2,3…(The Single Transferable Voting system).

Forgive me, but there are 27 candidates standing for the 7 elected positions on the Auckland District Health Board and I don’t have the stamina to review, research and rate each one. However I will rank them, as you are being asked to, in this STV contest. I have read each of their profiles. You can vote for as few or as many as you wish but don’t tick the boxes. Rank them from 1 (your favourite) down to 27 (you really, really have it in for this person if you’re going to go such lengths).

  1. Adam Hughes – C&R – Communities and Residents
  2. Douglas Armstrong – World Class Health Auckland
  3. Ian Ward – C&R – Communities and Residents
  4. Fiona Lai – C&R – Communities and Residents
  5. Pete Williams – Independent
  6. Adam Amos – Independent
  7. Kullasit Chutipongpisit – Independent
  8. Patrick Cummuskey – City Vision Health
  9. Monique Poirier – C&R – Communities and Residents
  10. Glyn Richards – Independent
  11. Te Karare Scarborough
  12. Susan Fleming – Independent
  13. Jude Keys – Independent
  14. Debbie Burrows – C&R – Communities and Residents
  15. Troy Elliot – C&R – Communities and Residents
  16. Zoe Brownlie – Independent
  17. Kerrin Leonie – City Vision Health
  18. Ross Boswell
  19. William Tamakehu Davis – Independent
  20. Michelle Atkinson – City Vision Health
  21. Tadhg Tim Stopford – The Hemp Foundation
  22. Jo Agnew – City Vision Health
  23. Kyle MacDonald – City Vision Health
  24. Peter Davis – City Vision Health
  25. Helen Gaeta – City Vision Health
  26. Kit Parkinson – C&R – Communities and Residents
  27. Gerhard Sundborn – Independent

So, who is the guy I went to the effort of ranking 27th? The founder of FIZZ (Fighting Sugar in Soft Drinks).

One last piece of advice. If you decide to investigate the candidates independently and rank them yourself (to be fair, you really should), write their names out on a piece of paper first. There will be some crossing out, moving about, changing your mind and accidentally missing someone.

Enjoy.
