Sara Howard, the private detective, calls on her friends Dr Laszlo Kreizler, the criminal psychologist (known in the 19th Century as an “alienist”) and journalist John Moore for assistance when she’s hired to find the Spanish ambassador’s kidnapped baby, leading to the discovery of a disturbing series of murders.

Howard is played by Dakota Fanning, with Luke Evans playing Moore and Daniel Brühl as Dr Kreizler in this tense period drama that critics enjoyed for its chilling atmosphere and star performances.

TV Fanatic says, “Just when you think that The Alienist couldn’t possibly get any darker, it does.” Collider nails it on the head (so to speak): “Sometimes all you want is a really compelling murder mystery with high production value and compelling characters, and in that way The Alienist: Angel of Darkness delivers.”
