As George Orwell so accurately predicted in his instruction manual for governments in the 21st century: “War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength”. A wonderful example of this Orwellian double-speak has been provided for us by the ACLU, the American Civil Liberties Union.
In the years following World War I, America was gripped by the fear that the Communist Revolution that had taken place in Russia would spread to the United States. As is often the case when fear outweighs rational debate, civil liberties paid the price. In November 1919 and January 1920, in what notoriously became known as the “Palmer Raids,” Attorney General Mitchell Palmer began rounding up and deporting so-called radicals. Thousands of people were arrested without warrants and without regard to constitutional protections against unlawful search and seizure. Those arrested were brutally treated and held in horrible conditions.
In the face of these egregious civil liberties abuses, a small group of people decided to take a stand, and thus was born the American Civil Liberties Union.
ACLU
After extolling their virtue telling us how they defended the freedom of speech of a Nazi group in 1978 they say:
That commitment to principle in difficult situations continues today. Since the tragic terrorist attacks of 9/11, the ACLU has been working vigorously to oppose policies that sacrifice our fundamental freedoms in the name of national security.
ACLU
They round off their history with:
But the work of defending freedom never ends, and in our vibrant and passionate society, difficult struggles over individual rights and liberties aren’t likely to disappear anytime soon. The ACLU is committed to fight for freedom and the protection of constitutional rights for generations to come.

Ever watchful for evil things that may happen, the ACLU prepared a pandemic report way back in 2008.
forcible vaccination and quarantine measures adopted in response to outbreaks of the plague and smallpox over the past century have consistently accelerated rather than slowed the spread of disease, while fomenting public distrust and, in some cases, riots.

Maybe they were not following the science back in 2008?
Also, while it is likely that almost everyone will want, and even demand, access to vaccine— the right to refuse to be vaccinated should be honored. No one should be forced to be vaccinated against their will both because of the constitutional right to refuse treatment, and pragmatically because forced vaccination will deter at least some people from seeking medical help when they need it.

Fast forward to 2021 and we find the ACLU in the trenches, fighting for the civil liberties of the average American in the face of COVID-19 government over-reach. Or NOT!
Apparently, without a shred of irony, the ACLU has just tweeted this.
“vaccine mandates actually further civil liberties”
Really? And I guess the sea is dry, the sky is green and the grass is red.
There are some fantastic responses to that tweet, but I’ll just leave you with this one.
