Cash-for-passes scandal forces 322 re-sits at Auckland testing site

"We have zero tolerance for dishonesty..."

More than 300 drivers must re-sit their tests after Vehicle Testing New Zealand (VTNZ) officers at VTNZ Highbrook allegedly took cash to pass applicants.

NZTA says an inquiry found serious misconduct by five driver testing officers who are now dismissed, with their testing endorsements suspended. Police are investigating.

VTNZ has halted licence testing at Highbrook while inquiries continue. NZTA will contact 322 affected licence holders and require a free on-road re-test to confirm they are safe to drive. VTNZ, which conducts more than 200,000 practical tests a year, says it has zero tolerance for dishonesty and is reviewing systems and extra security measures.

Country manager Greg O’Connor said public safety is the priority and the company will support any action by NZTA or Police.

“We have zero tolerance for dishonesty, and will leave no stone unturned to uncover and eliminate any improper behaviour,” he said.
