This Government emptied the prisons, removed three strikes legislation, and ordered the Police to take a softer approach to dealing with criminals by implementing what is essentially a catch-and-release programme. The result of all that is an out-of-control crime problem that is widespread, but particularly hard-felt in Auckland. The statistics prove it.
Mark Mitchell has received new statistics via an answer to a written parliamentary question:
The latest data from Police shows that the number of reported retail crime incidents has spiked to more than 10,000 in a single month – the highest in recorded history.
Criminals feel emboldened because they know they will not be held accountable by this soft on crime Labour Government. That is why violent crime is up by 21 per cent, and why New Zealanders have seen a 56 per cent increase in gang members.
Every day, Kiwis are becoming the victims of crime because criminals believe they can operate with impunity.
While Kiwis have had nothing but inaction from this Labour Government, National has released a comprehensive policy to tackle the tsunami of retail offending largely driven by youths.

The current Police Minister is the former Police Minister who started this trend, and the new Prime Minister is the last Police Minister who oversaw a massive leap in crime under his watch.
We can’t really expect them to come up with any solutions because past performance is always a good predictor of future performance.
Meanwhile, this Government is pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into making life very difficult for the most vetted and checked members of society by pursuing increasingly draconian gun laws and trying to achieve that which no other country in the world has ever achieved, a working gun register.
Surely those hundreds of millions would be better spent on actually policing criminals?
While this Government remains in place expect to see continued rises in crime rates, especially as economic constraints start to bite.
Crime is a core indicator of malaise in society, and that malaise is now a crime epidemic. As economic conditions worsen so too will the crime statistics. Parts of Auckland are now virtual war zones, and crime is rampant. The hardest hit are those who can least afford it.
The country is in a dire position, and all Chris Hipkins can do is ditch expensive boondoggles while his citizens are demanding that the Police do their job. Confidence in the ability of Police to do their job is at an all-time low. I’m not even sure it can be recovered.
This Labour Government has no answers. They will circle the drain for the next eight months before leaving a country much worse off from their six years in power. The clean-up of our country from the legacy of the failure of the Labour Government is going to take decades.
