NZ First leader Winston Peters says the government’s decision to undertake a new business case into a second Auckland Harbour crossing is “a gross waste of money”.
Peters, who is also the minister for rail, said he pitched an alternative plan, to immediately put the harbour crossing to tender, but was out voted in cabinet. The cabinet manual instructs all cabinet ministers to take “collective responsibility” for decisions, unless coalition parties formally invoke an “agree to disagree” clause.
His comments seemed to surprise both Transport Minister Chris Bishop and Prime Minister Christopher Luxon.
