Defence Minister Judith Collins has denounced the “deeply concerning, mysoginistic narrative” that has developed around the sinking of the HMNZS Manawanui.
Collins said a group of “armchair admirals” had conspired to blame the incident on the ship’s captain, Commanding Officer Commander Yvonne Gray, because she is a woman.
“The one thing that we already know did not cause [the ship’s sinking] was the gender of the ship’s captain,” Collins said.
The minister said she was appalled by some of the comments online, and said some military personal had been abused in the street because of the incident.
“New Zealanders are better than this,” Collins said. “Be better.”
