Shane Jones is making no apologies for shouting “send the Mexicans home” during a Parliament debate this week, despite the Green Party calling his words “racist” and “xenophobic”.
The New Zealand First minister made the comment during a debate on Prime Minister Christopher Luxon’s statement on Tuesday.
The Greens urged the Speaker and Prime Minister to reprimand Jones, with Green MP Ricardo Menéndez March, who was born in Mexico, calling the comments “outwardly racist and xenophobic”.
Jones referenced US President Donald Trump in his jeers, yelling, “Trump! Trump! Send the Mexicans home!”
Asked by Newstalk ZB’s Mike Hosking this morning whether he stood by his comments, Jones said “It’s a Mexican stand-off”.
