Kiwi athletics sensation Sam Ruthe didn’t just become the first 15-year-old in history to run a sub-four minute mile on Wednesday.
He did so by almost two seconds, finishing with a time of 3min 58.35sec at the end of his four-and-a-bit laps around the Herb Towers Athletics Track at Go Media Stadium in Auckland.
“This was probably my favourite goal that I’ve reached,” the Tauranga Boys’ College student said afterwards, reflecting on a summer where he has also made great strides in the 1500m and 3000m, announcing himself as one of the hottest prospects in his chosen sport.
“I’ve definitely enjoyed this one the most, with all the people here supporting me.
“This has been the most set up for me, so I’m really happy to have gotten this one.”
