A complaint regarding an ad from popular used car dealers, Turners, has been upheld.
The Turners YouTube advertisement, presented by “Tina from Turners”, played by Sieni Leo'o Olo, encourages viewers, along with famous Kiwis like Hilary Barry and Lorde, to sell their cars at Turners.
The ad has been viewed on YouTube almost 3 million times. It contains lyrics and imagery such as “the one your auntie says looks shit” (as a woman (an “auntie”) throws a jandal), “The cops are looking out for it” (as a spotlight is being shone on a car), and “you got so fat, the seats don’t fit!” (as Tina is shown trying to get into a car, wearing an inflatable Japanese sumo outfit)
In its decision, the ASA said the complainant had said the ad “was a disgrace to Kiwis”, and had a variety of issues with it.
The complainant said the ad referred to the cops looking out for a car, implying it’s stolen. They also had concerns over the word “shit”, and said the ad was offensive to obese people, directed towards Māori and “a disgrace to Kiwis”.
