Microbiologist and science communicator Siouxsie Wiles has been abused after crowdfunding for her legal battle with her employer, Auckland University.
She says she took a financial hit of more than $400,000 when she took the University of Auckland to court for not doing enough to protect her from online abuse.
Wiles was a prominent speaker on Covid-19, and harassment against her escalated over her public commentary on the pandemic.
On Tuesday, she posted about her crowdfunding campaign on social media, prompting a barrage of negative comments.
“Facebook is a cesspit, and so they all come out. It’s got every flavour of harassment that I have been experiencing since March 2020,” Wiles said.
“There’s people making comments about my hair, about my weight. There’s people sending me pictures of nooses.”
Wiles was awarded $205,000 in June after taking the University of Auckland to the Employment Relations Authority.
